Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Publisher's colophon present on copyright page as required. Written after, but published before, the first Nero Wolfe novel, "Fer-de-Lance". A political mystery involving, obviously, the disappearance of the President of the United States. " The entire burden of the search for the President rested on Secret Service Agent Chick Moffat, the one man with the nerve and vision to follow an incredible trail of conspiracy to its deadly end!" A NEAR FINE book ( a trace of shelf wear to bright boards; top edge stained dark blue unfaded; pages crisp and clean; may have been read once!) in VERY GOOD jacket ( small chips to top of spine affecting "The"; one 3/4" creased but closed tear to top of front panel; spine a trifle tanned; $2.00 price still present). Overall a GORGEOUS copy of an early mystery by one of the genre's greats !!!! Produced as a movie by Paramount; Rosalind Russell's first appearance! More photos on request. **See our new cheaper postal rates to the USA and worldwide!***.
Published by Undated but on paper watermarked and docketed 'Written for Dublin about 1843', 1841
Manuscript / Paper Collectible

Add to basketFolio, 11 pp. On the rectos of eleven leaves of Britannia paper watermarked 'W H FELLOWS | 1841'. Held together with string. Text clear and complete. In ink, with deletions and emendations in pencil. Good, on aged paper. Docketed on reverse of last leaf. The subject of the poem is the execution of Conradine in the market square in Naples, 29 October 1268. The first section (3 pp) begins 'Italia fair Italia unto thee, | Was beauty given twice with misery, | At once the loveliest and the loveliest clime, | Thou wert the seat of Empire, and of crime; [.]'. An alternative to the last line has been written in, and deleted: 'Thy charms were only equalled by thy crime'. The second section (4 pp, originally titled 'The Morning immediately before the Execution') begins At that sweet hour when twilight into day, | Dips her dark wing, and mistlike fades away, [.]'. It contains another poem (deleted by the author), entitled 'Good Bye & Farewell', beginning 'The thrilling whisper of "Good Bye", | Thou not unmix'd with pain, | Seems to anticipate the joy, | Of meeting once again.' The third section (4 pp) begins 'Close to the castle walls, and just beneath, | A solemn scaffold rear'd its form of death, | While close around a dense and bristling mass, | Of soldiers, occupied the meanest place; [.]'. The author is not named. It may be a coincidence, but a review of M. E. Jeffreys 'Hoel the Hostage and other Poems' in the Metropolitan Magazine for June 1842 mentions that the volume contains a poem by this title, one of a number of historical narratives, 'replete with animation and descriptive spirit'.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. A rare example of the Manchu calligraphy, used for the learning of Manchurian syllables. Regarding the quality of the paper, the manuscript was made in the 19th century. The manuscript includes the rows of black ink syllables and its later transliteration into Russian Cyrillic, in graphite pencil. The manuscript comes with a leaf of the Chinese aphorisms, in Chinese and Manchu, written (or/and created) by a literati governor of Henan Chang/Zhang Feng-t ai/Fengtai (1857-1925). Text in Manchu, Russian, Chinese. Unusual format. 24 x 12 cm, ll. 14; 17,5 x 25 cm, 1 leaf. Occasional browning. Few small stains. Fukuro-toji binding. No wrappings, no cover. Spine is chipped.
