Lois Lammerhuber, einer der renommiertesten Fotografen weltweit, fotografierte die Venus von allen Seiten und in vielen Details in einer bisher noch nie möglich gewesenen Nähe zum Objekt. Unvergleichlich in der Kulturgeschichte des Menschen steht die Venus von Willendorf ganz am Beginn kreativen Schaffens. Unvergleichlich ist daher ihr Platz in der Welt der Kunst, die seit der Aufklärung als Ausdrucksform der Schönen Künste verstanden wird. Kunst ist heute ein Kulturprodukt, eine Schöpfung von Menschen, das Resultat eines phantasievollen Ablaufes, an dessen Ende das Kunstwerk steht. Vor 25.000 Jahren, zur Zeit des Entstehens der Venus, waren solche Überlegungen noch nicht einmal im Ansatz gedacht. Am Abend des 6. August 1908 reiste Josef Szombathy mit dem Schiff von Wien nach Aggsbach. Von dort nahm er am nächsten Morgen ein Fuhrwerk nach Willendorf, nicht ahnend, dass er an diesem Tag einen der größten archäologischen Funde der Menschheitsgeschichte machen sollte. Spätestens seit dem Jahr 1904 war der Bau einer Bahnlinie zwischen Krems und Grein im Gespräch. Josef Szombathy, der Leiter der anthropologisch-prähistorischen Sammlung des Naturhistorischen Hofmuseums, rechnete seit dieser Zeit damit, dass die archäologischen Fundstellen in Willendorf in der Wachau von den Bauarbeiten betroffen sein würden. Im Jänner 1908 wurde schließlich mit den Erdarbeiten begonnen. Josef Bayer, ein frisch promovierter Volontär am Naturhistorischen Hofmuseum, der in der Gegend aufgewachsen war, verfasste noch im selben Monat einen Aufruf an die Bevölkerung der Wachau. Man sollte melden, wenn urzeitliche Fundstellen zum Vorschein kämen. Szombathy beauftragte Hugo Obermaier 1908 bereits ein etablierter Wissenschafter und Bayer im Mai, die Arbeiten beim Bahnbau zu beobachten. Skizzen wurden angefertigt, Funde gesammelt oder angekauft. Nahe der Ziegelei Ebner in Willendorf waren an der frisch abgegrabenen Bahntrasse sieben dunkle Schichtbereiche im hellen Löss erkennbar. Das Obersthofmeisteramt bewilligte Josef Szombathy auf sein Ansuchen eine Subvention von 1200 Kronen für die systematische Untersuchung dieses 8x40m großen Streifens. Während der Arbeiten am Vormittag des 7. August ging Szombathy hinter den Arbeitern auf und ab, um zu beobachten, wie die Funde freigelegt werden. Er sah als Erster die Figur, auf die der Arbeiter Johann Veran gestoßen war und zeigte sie Bayer. Szombathy war sofort klar, was dieser Fund bedeutete. Er versuchte, sich nichts anmerken zu lassen und bezeichnete ihn als Lösskindl. Das sind Kalkkonkretionen, die eigenartigste Formen annehmen können, und so war das für die Arbeiter eine einleuchtende Erklärung. Szombathy hatte guten Grund, so ein Geheimnis um den Fund zu machen. Die Figur erschien ihm so bedeutend, dass er ihren Wert schon kurz nach der Auffindung auf ein Zehnfaches von Bayers Jahresgehalt schätzte. Er fotografierte die Fundstelle der Venus und ging gemeinsam mit Bayer in das Gasthaus unterhalb der Bahntrasse. Sie wuschen den Löss von ihrem Fund, um ihn genau betrachten zu können. Dabei sahen sie, dass sich rote Farbe von der kleinen Frauenplastik löste. Noch heute sind in allen Vertiefungen und sogar teilweise auch an der Oberfläche der Venus von Willendorf Reste des roten Farbstoffs vorhanden, mit dem sie vor 25.000 Jahren ganz bedeckt war. Noch 1909 wurden Abgüsse der Figur angefertigt, die aber nur wissenschaftlichen Institutionen zur Verfügung gestellt wurden. Erst 1910 wurde die internationale Presse von dem ungewöhnlichen Fund informiert. Josef Szombathy, der die Ausgrabung in Willendorf leitete, präsentierte die Venus von Willendorf 1909 seinen Fachkollegen auf einem Kongress in Posen. Obermaier, der einen nicht unerheblichen Teil der wissenschaftlichen Verantwortung bei der Ausgrabung trug, war über diesen Alleingang Szombathys gekränkt. Denn er, der ursprünglich vorgesehen war, über die Ausgrabung zu berichten, war auf eine gemeinsame Präsentation aller drei am Fund Beteiligten vertröstet worden. So kann man sehen, dass Männer auch noch über die ältesten Frauen der Welt zu streiten imstande sind. Was machte aber die Venus von Willendorf, die nun nicht gerade als ein Beispiel für weibliche Schönheit gelten kann und zweifelsfrei auch die am antiken Schönheitsideal orientierten Gelehrten irritierte, so weltberühmt? Zu Beginn des 20.Jahrhunderts kannte man gerade eine Handvoll vergleichbarer Plastiken. Alle, außer einer männlichen Figur aus einem Grab bei Brünn, stammten aus dubiosen oder schlecht beobachteten Aufsammlungen oder gar aus Raubgrabungen. Die Frauenplastik aus Willendorf zeugt von meisterhaftem Gestaltungsvermögen und ist darüber hinaus in einem ausgezeichneten Erhaltungszustand. Dazu kam noch, dass sie aus einer nach damaligen Standards gut dokumentierten Ausgrabung stammte und keine Zweifel an ihrer Provenienz bestehen konnten. Venus nannte man sie, weil die erste Frauenplastik der Altsteinzeit, die 1864 gefunden worden war, vom Vicomte de Vibraye als Venus impudique, bezeichnet worden war. Die Bezeichnung Venus bringt die Figuren unwillkürlich in Beziehung mit der antiken Göttin, was von den Prähistorikern dieser Zeit nicht wirklich beabsichtigt war. Da es den Begriff aber nun einmal gab, hielt er sich bis heute, obwohl sich die Wissenschaft bewusst ist, dass diese Namensgebung eher unglücklich ist, da sie ungewollt eine Interpretation sugg.
