Antoine Spring Geroldsbach (Allemagne) 8/04/1814, Liège 17/01/1872 Ayant suivi ses humanités à Augsbourg, Antoine Spring s'est très tôt passionné pour les lettres anciennes. Excellent musicien, il compose à l'âge de quatorze ans une messe qui allait être jouée à la cathédrale d'Augsbourg. Entré à l'université de Munich, c'est plutôt vers les Sciences naturelles qu'il se tourne. Proclamé en 1835 docteur lauréat en Philosophie et en Sciences naturelles, il obtient l'année suivante le diplôme de docteur lauro-coronatus en Médecine, Chirurgie et en Accouchements. Une fois ses études terminées, Antoine Spring se rend à Paris, où il séjourne durant six mois, ayant obtenu une bourse du gouvernement. Passionné de médecine, des arts (peinture et sculpture) et des lettres, il y fréquente les hôpitaux, le Museum d'Histoire naturelle, le Collège de France, ainsi que les galeries du Louvre. Son talent étant reconnu jusqu'en Belgique, il obtient en 1839 la chaire de Physiologie avec le titre de professeur ordinaire à l'Université de Liège. Cette nouvelle situation l'amène alors à s'installer en bord de Meuse en octobre de la même année. Tour à tour professeur de physiologie humaine et comparée, d'anatomie descriptive et générale, de pathologie générale et de clinique interne, puis recteur de l'Université de Liège de 1861 à 1864, il mène encore des recherches en botanique, en zoologie et dans les matières enseignées, et fait des travaux sur la hernie du cerveau. Il publie un ouvrage capital pour la médecine pratique, Symptomatologie ou traité des accidents morbides, dans lequel il expose les symptômes, les causes et les remèdes de divers cas rencontrés durant sa carrière de praticien. Également préoccupé par l'ancienneté de l'Homme, il découvre des ossements humains dans une caverne entre Namur et Dinant et émet l'hypothèse d'un festin de cannibales. Il compare ensuite ces ossements à ceux retrouvés à Engis et établit les signes distinctifs entre les deux espèces. Pendant plus de vingt ans, il est le praticien le plus répandu de Liège et des clients du pays entier viennent le consulter. TOME PREMIER UNIQUEMENT.
