Poète et diplomate italien de la fin de la Renaissance, Giovanni Battista Guarini (1538-1612) a publié ĞIl pastor fidoğ (Le Berger fidèle) à Venise en 1590. Cette pastorale, écrite en vers libres et sous forme de tragi-comédie, a été souvent représentée et a connu un retentissement européen. La traduction d'Antoine de Torche (1631-1675) a donné lieu à partir de 1666 à plusieurs éditions dont celle de 1702. Elle présente le texte original italien en page de gauche et sa traduction française en page de droite.
