La première édition parut à Paris chez Jean Ribou et Gabriel Quinet en 1668. Ces deux éditions sont fort rares. C'est la première fois qu'on trouve accolée au mot "nouvelle" l'épithète "galante", l'auteur ayant ainsi inventé l'expression pour traduire l'esprit qu'un certain nombre d'écrivains depuis Ségrais souhaitaient donner à ce genre littéraire. La nouvelle relate les aventures de Narcisse, gentilhomme italien métamorphosé par une magicienne dans le bois de Boulogne, passant aux mains de différents maîtres et maîtresses une fois devenu un bichon. "Torche avait innové, montrant une voie moderne au roman animal, qui s'hybride avec le conte merveilleux dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle. [.] L'abbé de Torche invente un autre procédé qu'on va retrouver dans Azor ou le Petit Toutou de Galli de Bibiena. Le protagoniste principal du Chien de Boulogne apparaît d'abord comme un véritable animal, qui écoute les badinages ou les confidences mélancoliques des humains, à qui il se révèle en prenant soudainement la parole, sur le mode du conte de fée, pour raconter ses malheurs. Le sens moral de la métamorphose peut néanmoins subsister : le Narcisse de Torche a été métamorphosé en toutou pour avoir suivi aveuglément une maîtresse infidèle.
