De belangrijkste leden van De Stijl waren Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondriaan, Vilmos Huszár, Bart van der Leck, J.J.P. Oud, Jan… Wils, Robert van 't Hoff, Gerrit Rietveld en Georges Vantongerloo. De inspiratiebron die De Stijl voor Nederlandse en internationale kunst is geweest, is tot nu toe nooit in kaart gebracht. Met dit boek wordt daar verandering in gebracht. Het boek biedt een rijke context voor het publiek van de tentoonstellingen die in 2017 te zien zullen zijn en vult tevens een hiaat op in de Nederlandse kunstgeschiedenis. Samenvattend kan gezegd worden dat in de literatuur over De Stijl en haar kunstenaars sprake is van grote invloed, maar dat deze nooit als centraal thema voor een boek is genomen. Het honderdjarig bestaan van De Stijl biedt daarom een goed aangrijpingspunt om de invloed en inspiratie van De Stijl voor een breed publiek te schrijven.
