First Edition
8vo. 128 pp. With 15 numbered engraved folding plans. Modern half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine and spine label. First edition in German: a fine example of early 19th century military instruction enriched with 15 manoeuvre plans. Published in Italian simultaneously; the German translation was prepared directly from the original Italian manuscript, titled "Il Generale in Campo". The author was a retired captain of the Austrian Imperial army, and the work is dedicated to the Imperial Aulic Council. - Based on Jacques de Guibert and other military writers, this attractive tactics handbook stresses the importance of training an army in times of peace, proposing a drill camp for 50,000 men of infantry, cavalry and artillery regiments, without omitting the art of fortification and knowledge of terrain as key factors in choosing adequate battle tactics. The exercises and battle formations to be practiced are not only described in detail, but are also displayed on the folding manouevre plans, complete with Italian captions. Rarely seen at auction. - Paper somewhat worn around the margins; otherwise very well preserved. - Pohler, Bibliotheca historico-militaris III, 641. Kat. der k. k. Kriegs-Bibliothek 183.
