Er verstand in seinen Bildnissen, über die äußere Ähnlichkeit hinaus, den Charakter eines Menschen präzise zu erfassen. Im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert wurde er so zum eigentlichen Schöpfer des bürgerlichen Frauen- und Männerporträts in Deutschland und zugleich zum bevorzugten Porträtmaler deutschsprachiger Dichter und Denker zwischen Aufklärung, Weimarer Klassik und Frühromantik. Anton Graff hinterließ der Nachwelt eine herausragende Übersicht über die Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit, in der es kaum einen großen Fürsten, Staatsmann, General, Gelehrten, Dichter, Künstler oder Kaufmann in Deutschland gab, der sich nicht von ihm porträtieren ließ.
