The only Spanish edition of this study of fifty of the aphorisms of Hippocrates relating to the history, theory and practice of surgery. Each aphorism is given in Latin together with a Spanish translation followed by the author's commentary. The wide range of subjects covered includes angina, toothache, hunger and thirst, the hepatic ligaments, and naval surgery. Bernardino Genga (1655-1734) taught surgery and anatomy in Rome where he was physician at the Hospital of the Holy Spirit. He was a supporter of Harvey, whose theory he greatly advanced in Italy, and he was not afraid of charging Hippocrates with grave errors in surgical treatment. Jan (or Johannes de) Gorter (1689-1762), town physician and director of the botanical garden at Harderwijk, here contributes to the classification of diseases attempted during the 18th century; it is considered his main work. Gorter enjoyed a considerable reputation both as a botanist and medical doctor. Linnaeus had submitted his doctoral thesis to him at Harderwijk in 1735; Gorter acted as personal physician to the Czarina Elisabeth of Russia 1754-1758. Blake, p181 lists the Padua 1795 edn.
