On 5 x 13.5 cm piece of paper, cut from the end of a letter and laid down on one side of part of a leaf from an album, the mount carrying a cropped cartoon on the other side. In good condition, lightly aged, with the mount a little ruckled. Simply reads: 'Your sincerely / August Courtauld'. Captioned on mount: 'August Courtauld - explorer'. The cartoon is intriguing. In black ink with pencil guide lines, and cropped at the bottom, it shows a bearded figure in military costume, standing on his doorstep with two trees beside him, confronting a young girl with the face and lorgnette of an old man with a sign which says 'CAUTION / NO ENGLISH / NEED APPLY'. See Image.

The native population of Greenland gave her the name of "Ahnighito," or "Snow Baby," being the first white child born in their community. She grew up immersed in the world of exploration and later married Washington attorney, Lt. Edward Stafford. Marie contributed to polar history by preserving her father's legacy and advocating for Arctic research. She was the author of several books on her father's life of Arctic exploration and an autobiography titled "The Snowbaby's Own Story.". Signed.

(Arctic Bibliography, 10171)This copy is inscribed on the front endpaper: "For Captain Julius Kahn Lacey / with best wishes for his Greenland investigations from / Vilhjalmur Stefansson / July 23, 1940." The 1934 British Trans-Greenland Expedition, led by Sir Martin Lindsay (1905-1981), began in May 1934 and lasted for about three months. The team covered approximately 570 miles, mapping the previously unexplored Crown Prince Frederick Mountain Range, the highest peaks in Greenland. They utilized lightweight, specially designed sleds and Greenland huskies for transportation, navigating the harsh Arctic environment. Despite facing temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C), the expedition collected important scientific data on the ice cap's thickness, weather conditions, and glaciology. This expedition was followed in 1940 by a survey led by United States Air Force Captain Julius K. Lacey, who detailed possible locations for port facilities and air bases in Greenland, prior to U.S. involvement in World War II. Lacey went on to command the 384th Bombing Group during WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Air Medal, all with Oak Leaf Clusters. Signed.

In good condition, lightly aged and worn. He writes to Bax 'c/o Hill & Peters'. The letter begins: 'Just as I am starting on a lecture tour, a letter comes from Marjorie Humphreys saying you are about to arrive and asking that I do something for you. I would like that, both for her sake and to have the chance of meeting you and learning at first hand about conditions in Britain.' He will attempt to get in touch with Bax on his return the following week. In the meantime he is writing to the Harvard Club, 'asking them to make you a visiting member for their maximum period, which is two weeks from the day when you call for your card'. He ends with contact details. An autograph note at the foot of the letter reads: 'The card entitles you to get a room in the Club, should you prefer it to a hotel.' The letter is accompanied by a manuscript biography, written during Stefansson's lifetime in a calligraphic hand on a separate leaf.
