Durch das Open Source Lizenzmodell und seine Gestaltung als plattformunabhängige Serverapplikation ist es vielseitig und auch in nichtkommerziellen Umgebungen einsetzbar. Letztlich umgibt TYPO3 eine, vor allem in Deutschland, aktive Anwendergruppe, welche durch das Programmieren von Extensions den Funktionsumfang des Systems ständig erweitert.
