The sixteenth century, which heralded the end of the Middle Ages and the commencement of the Early Modern Era, was a time of tremendous religious upheaval and social ferment. The nebulous conglomeration of movements often referred to as the "Reformation" led to a wave of bloodshed and persecution which engulfed most of Europe for at least a hundred years. The present volume offers a translation of a particularly graphic literary portrayal of tortures and atrocities committed against Catholics during that timethe Speculum Haereticae Crudelitatis [The Mirror of Heretical Cruelty], by Arnold Havens (15401610). Havens was a Carthusian monk, an accomplished historian and scholar, and a prolific author. The Mirror of Cruelty is a remarkable and unique literary achievement, describing in gruesome and chilling detail an extensive catalogue of disturbing, inhuman and often bizarre acts of abuse. Most of these have not been available in any English-language sources until now, or have been presented only in abridged and bowdlerized forms. Havens drew the overall plan of his work from another book which enjoyed a wide, underground circulation at the timethe notorious Theatrum Crudelitatum [Theatre of Cruelties], by Richard Verstegan, a kind of nightmarish picture-book of atrocities committed against Catholics. A selection of illustrations from that book are included in this volume. Offers a translation of a particularly graphic literary portrayal of tortures and atrocities committed against Catholics during the Speculum Haereticae Crudelitatis (The Mirror of Heretical Cruelty), by Arnold Havens (1540-1610). Havens was a Carthusian monk, an accomplished historian and scholar, and a prolific author. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

First Edition
Hardcover (Vellum). Condition: Very Good. Johannes Leopold (illustrator). Unstated. This small volume brings together two important Counter-Reformation works: Maurice Chauncy on the martyrdom of 18 Carthusian monks in England under Henry VIII between 1535 and 1540 and Arnold Havens on twelve Carthusians killed in the Netherlands in 1572 by soldiers of William of Orange. Both have a separate title page and one internal engraving by Johannes Leopold (pp. 48 & 27).Chauncy provides what Gribbin (2012) calls âa largely accurate and moving account of the martyrdomâ of the English monks, who refused to take the Royal Supremacy oath recognizing Henry VIII as the head of the Church. In rejecting the English kingâs claim, the refusal was viewed as treasonous. Chauncy, a monk at the London Charter House, initially refused to take the oath, but relented, thinking it would preserve the monastery. He quickly renounced his oath but was haunted by his brief betrayal.Havens was also a Carthusian monk, an eyewitness to the 1572 massacre from which he escaped. In 1608 he published a detailed account of the event. After Chauncy fled to Belgium he wrote four different versions of his account, one of which was first published in 1550. It appears here in a version adapted by Havens and printed in 1608 to accompany his new work on the Roermond martyrs. Although there is no indication of the place of publication or printer of Havensâ account, it is included in the initial omnibus title page, which has the imprint of Gualterus Manilius in Ghent. Both are dated 1608. Frans Hendrickx, in a 2008 review in Revue dâhistoire ecclà siastique, writes, âWithout an impressum, it is not known exactly where the first edition [of Havensâ work] was published. Reference has been made to the printed matter in Cologne, Würzburg and Ghent, all from 1608.â He argues âthere is good reason to accept that the first place of publication was Ghent,â pointing particularly to the fact that Havensâ letter of dedication is dated February 29, 1608 in Ghent. He adds, âThis may mean that Gualterus Manilius, a member of the famous Ghent printing family, published the story first.â The second part also includes Havenâs âExhortatio ⦠de observatione disciplinae regularisâ (pp. 57-77) in which he praises the regular discipline and solidary life of the Carthusian monks. According to the STCV listing, this oration is mentioned in Vanderhaeghen, F. Bib. Gantoise I, 477, but it is overlooked in the other listings. The omnibus title from the first title page roughly translates, in part, as: âAccount of the Life and the Martyrdom of Eighteen Carthusians who in England under King Henry VIII were cruelly murdered for the defense of the Church and against a detestable schism. ⦠Together with a new Historical relation of the twelve Carthusian Martyrs of Roermond in the Year 1572.â There are two errors in the sub-title: (1) The year for the Roermond attack is misprinted as M.D.DXXII (with D rather than L for 72) and (2) âangonemâ has been corrected to âagonemâ by the extraneous ânâ being scratched out. USTC 1003501, STCV 6623698, Allison & Rogers I, 239, Graesse III, p. 220. Allison & Rogers describe this as another issue of their no. 238, âInnocentia et constantia victrix â¦â (published by Bernard Gualterus, Cologne, 1608), with a revised title. The STCV listing adds that âManilius substituted the title page and preliminariesâ in this printing.Pagination: [8] 111 [1 blank]; [16] 77 [3] â" Missing four pages [leaves 9-12], which Allison & Rogers (1989) describe as âthe âIndex capitumâ . . . [and] the end of dedicatory verses covered over with a new, folding, engraved plate â¦.âCollation: *4 A-G8 (E2 for F2); a/*8 b-f8 â" Allison & Rogers (1989) say, âIn pt. 2 the title is cancelled and replaced by a bifolium consisting of a new title printed by Manilius and an engraved plate,â but that is not the case here, where the original title page (with no imprint) is retained. The USTC reports six copies in four inst.

A C17 sammelband of the first editions of Counter-Reformation works on Carthusian martyrology, pilgrimage and ecclesiastical antiquities. Maurice Chauncy (1509-81) was an English Carthusian. Having been spared martyrdom, unlike other monks from the London Charterhouse, by accepting the Oath of Supremacy after the Anglican Schism, he fled to a monastery in Bruges. His guilt for this weakness urged him to write works, including 'Innocentia', on the lives, customs and holy deaths of the Carthusian martyrs he knew at the time of Henry VIII. Arnold Havens (1540-1610) was Prior of the Charterhouse at Ghent. Whilst remembering those killed in London during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, his work provided an account of the martyrdom of twelve Carthusians from Roermond, murdered near the altar by Protestant soldiers during the Dutch revolt of 1572, as illustrated in the gory engraving. Havens called the soldiers 'haeretici' who carried out this 'sacrilega barbaries' out of 'avarice' for the treasures of the Church. Little is known of Erhard Winheim (fl. early C17), whose works blend learned antiquarianism, local history and Counter-Reformation devotion. 'Peregrinatio' transferred onto the map of the city of Cologne the route of the Seven Churches of Rome to be visited at pilgrimagee.g. the Cathedral, St Severin's Church and St Gereonlisting orations to be recited in front of specific altars. 'Sacrarium Agrippinae' (referring to the city's Latin name, Colonia Agrippinae) was devoted to the saints and churches of Cologne, with accounts of their history. Gaspar Dinghens (1593?-1685) from Cologne studied theology at Louvain and was also versed in Hebrew. He joined the Dominican order in 1613 and entered a monastery in Antwerp; he was also sent on missions to Belgium and France. I) USTC 2092928; Allison & Rogers, English Counter-Reformation, I, 238. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The sixteenth century, which heralded the end of the Middle Ages and the commencement of the Early Modern Era, was a time of tremendous religious upheaval and social ferment. The nebulous conglomeration of movements often referred to as the 'Reformation' led to a wave of bloodshed and persecution which engulfed most of Europe for at least a hundred years. The present volume offers a translation of a particularly graphic literary portrayal of tortures and atrocities committed against Catholics during that time-the Speculum Haereticae Crudelitatis [The Mirror of Heretical Cruelty], by Arnold Havens (1540-1610). Havens drew the overall plan of his work from another book which enjoyed a wide, underground circulation at the time-the notorious Theatrum Crudelitatum [Theatre of Cruelties], by Richard Verstegan, a kind of nightmarish picture-book of atrocities committed against Catholics. A selection of illustrations from that book are included in this volume. 100 pp. Englisch.
