The frontispiece is an aquatint, ''Figures from a Seal'' (1954), specially designed for this book and hand-coloured by the artist. Eleven colour and 244 monochrome reproductions. Eight pages of reproductions in four colour line-and-tone. A monochrome lithograph and three colour lithographs also specially drawn for this book. Endpapers and gilt design on upper cover by the artist. Lithographs printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris. Top edge gilt. Deluxe edition, this being one of the twenty out of series copies - there were also fifty numbered copies signed by the author and artist. From the library of noted collector, artist and writer Allen Freer with his bookplate on the limitation page, as well as a pencilled note stating that this copy had belonged to Sir Geoffrey Faber, the publisher, and was acquired from Lady Faber in 1977. A further note indicates that John Piper signed the book for Freer on the limitation page as well as on the frontispiece and on each of the four lithographs. Loosely inserted is an Autograph Postcard Signed by Myfanwy, the wife of John Piper, dated 3.11.90: about 90 words to Allen Freer partly about John's failure to recover fully from an operation and partly about the recent death of their son Edward, also an artist. Fine in good, torn, chipped and rubbed dustwrapper repaired on the reverse and in the cloth slipcase which is rubbed at the edges. An extraordinary copy.
