Fernand Portal was born in 1855 in the South of France and after school he entered the seminary, being ordained a priest of St. Vincent de Paul's Congregation of the Mission, also known as Lazarists or Vincentians, at the age of 25. The Lazarists are a congregation of secular priests with religious vows, with a vocation to work among the poorest and most under-privileged, who also became the inspiration for the Society of the Holy Cross in the Anglican Church, to which many of today's Ordinariate priests belonged. He is called by Macmillan an "apostle of unity" on account of his many efforts to establish better relations between Anglicans and the Holy See. He worked for this cause especially during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII, who was exploring the possibility of union with the Anglican Church. Macmillan's work is valuable for anyone interested in precursors to the 20th century ecumenical movement and/or in the history of Anglican/Catholic relations.

This book explores innovative methods to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of gas engines, specifically focusing on the injection of oil into the cylinder. The author delves into the thermodynamic principles behind gas engines and analyzes the advantages and limitations of the Otto, Diesel, and Brayton cycles. Through extensive research, the author proposes a novel combined cycle that aims to optimize engine performance. By combining features from both the Otto and Brayton cycles, this new cycle offers the potential for improved efficiency and control over the engine's power output. The book presents detailed calculations and experimental data to support the proposed cycle, offering valuable insights for engineers and researchers working in the field of internal combustion engines. Overall, this book provides a comprehensive exploration of oil injection techniques and their impact on gas engine performance, contributing to the ongoing quest for more efficient and versatile power generation systems.
