First edition 1932 hardcover in good condition, some discoloration and some shelf wear on cover, spine and edges. 42 black-and-white picture plates, without page numbers. 4°, illustrated original cardboard binding (= Dutch). - Arthur Stadler (1892-1937), graphic artist, painter, and journalist, attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied, among others, with Bertold Löffler. In 1915, he was drafted into military service, where he documented the events on the front in numerous drawings. After the end of the war, he earned his living as a singer and portrait artist and traveled, among other places, to the Netherlands, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Sweden. Returning to Vienna, he worked until 1930 as a cartoonist for the newspaper 'Der Abend' and worked as an illustrator and journalist for 'Moderne Welt', the 'Wiener Sonn- und Montagszeitung', and the 'Illustrierte Roman-Zeitung'. In addition, he was active as a commercial graphic artist and illustrated, among others, works by Selma Lagerlöf (with whom he was friends), Romain Rolland, and Panait Istrati. In 1930, he published his portfolio work 'Gesichter' in Vienna. A radical indictment against the war, which also appeared in The Hague in 1932. (= Niederländisch.) - Arthur Stadler (1892-1937), Graphiker, Maler und Journalist, besuchte die Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule, wo er u.a. bei Bertold Löffler studierte. Er wurde 1915 zum Kriegsdienst eingezogen, wo er das Frontgeschehen in zahlreichen Zeichnungen dokumentierte. Nach Kriegsende verdiente er seinen Lebensunterhalt als Sänger und Porträtzeichner und bereiste u. a. die Niederlande, Ungarn und die Tschechoslowakei und Schweden. Nach Wien zurückgekehrt, war er bis 1930 als Karikaturist für die Zeitung ?Der Abend? tätig und arbeitete als Illustrator und Journalist für die ?Moderne Welt?, die ?Wiener Sonn- und Montagszeitung? und die ?Illustrierte Roman-Zeitung? Daneben wirkte er auch als Gebrauchsgraphiker und illustrierte u. a. Werke von Selma Lagerlöf (mit der er befreundet war), Romain Rolland und Panait Istrati. 1930 veröffentlichte er in Wien sein Mappenwerk ?Gesichter?, eine radikale Anklage gegen den Krieg, das 1932 auch in Den Haag erschien.
