12mo, 1 p. 6 lines. Clear and complete. Fair, on aged and slightly grubby paper, with strip of glue from mount on blank reverse, which has laid down on it a ten-line biographical newspaper cutting referring to Slade ('[.] one of the youngest major-generals on the Staff in the Army [.] His most recent appointment was that of Assistant Adjutant-General at Woolwich'). He is sending 'a missed lot of Soldiers autographs. Some that you already have may be useful in exchanging for others'.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A heavy (2-1/2 lb.), 9-1/4 inch octavo in dull green cloth with gilt titles, complete with B&W frontispiece portrait of Stuart and the seven original folding maps (the Fredericksburg map in a wonderful three colors) including three in the rear pocket where we find the equally impressive two-color maps of Richmond and of Brandy Station -- though the B&W map of the route of Stuart's Cavalry Division from Oct. 9, 1862 to July 2, 1863 has separated into two halves along the central fold line.) Blindstamped "Cornell University Library" to top right of title page, but the only other evidence of a library history is the removal scars of a manila attachment -- possibly a card holder -- from attached partial leaf that forms the rear map-pocket. No edge stampings, and if there was a Dewey number to spine, it's long removed. Errata slip tipped in at bottom of "List of Maps" page (unnumbered pg. xvii.) Both top and bottom page edges dyed dark gray. Small bookseller label of D.A. Bulen, Randolph Street, Meadville, PA to bottom of otherwise blank front Free Endpaper. Ending at pg. 417 with Stuart's death, followed by the Appendix and then the rolls of the First, Second and Third Virginia Cavalry, through pg. 468. Reduced from $300.

Document. Condition: Fair. Manuscript Document. Approx. 12.5" x 8". General Order No. 18 written on the front side and signed by the Assistant Adjutant General H. W. Walter. Also located on the lower left corner of the document is written "Maj Genl Wheeler ? a' g Wheeler's Cav Corps." On the verso is a handwritten summary of the order. The paper has dried water stains. The ink is light in spots. This handwritten General Order was reprinted in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion (War of the Rebellion Records Series I. Vol. XXIII Part II Correspondence, Etc. Chapter XXXV pages 858, 859). The signature at the bottom of the document is not legible but it is not in the hand of General Wheeler. The document reads: The enemy has seen fit to expel from his lines and send to our midst not only those supposed to be guilty of crimes but non-combatants found in their homes in the peaceful pursuits of life. In the perpetration of these outrages on humanity, and these violations of civilized warfare, he has prostituted the flag of truce to the base purpose of protecting the guards who drive forth these exiles. Hereafter that flag will not protect those guards, but they will be seized and sent forward to be treated as spies or prisoners of war as the circumstances in each case may require. By Command of General Bragg.
