Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations.

FERRERS GALLERY, LONDON, 1970 SIX ORIGINAL 1970 ATKINSON GRIMSHAW EXHIBITION WINDOW CARDS FINE ART, ROMANTICISM, LANDSCAPES, DOCKS INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL 1970 FERRERS EXHIBITION CATALOGUE LOT DESCRIPTION, PLEASE READ Unless you are fortunate enough to own an original Atkinson Grimshaw, this seldom seen collection of original Ferrers Gallery window cards is the ultimate way to collect, share or simply enjoy the delicate beauty, atmosphere and authenticity of Victorian fine art - perfect for framing in your home or office, private display or public exhibition. Yorkshire born John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) is most noted for his depiction of moonlit Victorian streets and docks and in today's art market he is considered a blue-chip investment with his best known works commanding significant six-figure sums. The iconic Ferrers Gallery, London, first exhibited Atkinson Grimshaw in November 1964 and then again in 1970 when they went the extra mile and published a lavishly illustrated fifty-six-page catalogue written by Lady Jane Abdy to accompany the exhibition. That catalogue is included in this LOT along with six of Ferrers Gallery's own exhibition window cards (all sized approximately 50cm x 40cm). The window cards were published by renowned London printers Stellar Press Ltd. in extremely small numbers to help publicize the exhibition. After the exhibition closed the window cards would later be gifted to important patrons. Four of the window cards feature Atkinson Grimshaw works which appeared in the 1970 catalogue. All four are stamped on the recto by the publishers Stellar Press Ltd and Ferrers Gallery and also have an identifying gallery sticker verso which reads "Ferrers Gallery Ltd. 9 Picadilly Arcade. London S.W.1. Published 1970". Two additional window cards included in this LOT feature works which did not actually appear in the catalogue or exhibition. These two window cards are stamped on recto by the printers Stellar Press Ltd and Ferrers Gallery but do not have the identifying gallery sticker on verso. The four mentioned window cards, with the named works appearing in the catalogue are: 1) Nightfall on the Thames 1880 2) Evening, Whitby Harbour 1893 3) Scarborough (Unknown) 4) Whitby Harbour by Moonlight 1867 The two additional window cards that did not make the catalogue or exhibition feature the works: 1) Endymion on Mount Latmus 1879 2) The Lady of Shalott 1875 PREVIOUS OWNERSHIP The catalogue and window cards were previously the property of Cheshire councilor Horace Green of Woodhey, Ness, on the Wirral. Horace joined the Liverpool Botanical Society in 1923 and soon afterwards became its Secretary. Later, in 1936 he became President, an office he held on several occasions in the years that followed until his death in 1973. The window cards were bequeathed to me flat wrapped in the pages of an old August 1970 edition of the Sunday Express newspaper. That newspaper still accompanies the LOT. The newspaper was probably adopted to help avoid further damp. While well intended that practice did little to help. PAYMENT, SHIPPING & INSURANCE Securely consigned fully insured, PACKAGED FLAT BETWEEN POLYSTYRENE BOARDS WITH DOUBLE SKIN CORRUGATED CARDBOARD & WATERPROOF OUTER shipped with tracked national or international postal service.
