No Binding. Condition: Good. Original Document. One sheet. One and a half pages of handwritten text, then folded for mailing. Not stated but context of letter indicates Kentucky politician and Speed's cousin, Joshua Fry Bell, as recipient. Some general wear but no loss of text. Handwritten and signed by future Abraham Lincoln Attorney-General James Speed, who was also Lincoln's personal friend and brother of Joshua Speed, Lincoln's closest friend in Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln later visited the Speeds at Farmington, near Louisville, Kentucky in 1841 and spent several weeks recuperating from his broken engagement with Mary Todd. Speed was present at the deathbed of Lincoln after he was shot at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. This letter from 1839 deals with family finances between the Speed and Bell families, who were cousins. Joshua Fry Bell eventually served as a U.S. congressman, Kentucky Secretary of State and as Kentucky's representative to the Peace Conference of 1861, trying to avert the Civil War. Interesting items, casting light on the nitty-gritty of Victorian constituency politics. Both are signed 'W. S. Robson' and addressed to 'B. Piffard Esq'. Both in good condition, lightly aged, with the second a little spotted. Each on a bifolium. ONE (26 May 1885): 3pp, 12mo. He has been informed 'that it is now the wish of the Watford (or Divisional) Association that I should visit the Division & address meetings there. In fact they have asked me to speak at a meeting at Watford next Saturday evening & I have consented.' He will be happy to 'deliver my address at Hemel Hempstead on the Saturday following 2.5. Saturday week.' He stresses that he is not visiting the division as a candidate. 'I was asked to meet the Committee of the Divisional Association at Watford with the view of becoming a Candidate but declined to do so on grounds stated in a letter to them & which I shall be happy to explain to you when we have the pleasure of meeting.' He agrees with Piffard 'that it is the new voters who have mainly to be considered in the coming fight. They are at present outside the organisation of either party & must be won to Liberalism'. TWO (15 June 1885): 4pp, 12mo. In much the same tone as One. Discusses his 'Watford Speech', which was not intended as 'a declaration of political views', but rather as 'a controversial skirmish against the inconsistent & dishonest attitude of the Tories in modern politics'. His address 'might be entitled "How shall we use our vote?" ' He is still being cagey: 'I would rather not appear definitely as a Candidate'. In the remainder of the letter - more than half - he describes how he believes the candidates should conduct themselves. For all his talk of dishonesty it was Robson who was hedging his bets; he never did stand for Piffard's district, being elected to Bow and Bromley, 1885-1885, and to South Shields, 1895-1910.…

Kintner was Director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute before serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand during the Ford administration. The recipient of this book, Nicholas Katzenbach, served as United States Attorney General for Lyndon B. Johnson. While serving as Deputy U.S. Attorney General , he notoriously confronted Alabama Governor George Wallace at the University of Alabama, demanding the school be integrated. Shortly after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Katzenbach advised Johnson that an independent investigation into the assassination was needed, leading to the creation of the Warren Commission. Full leather. Condition: Near fine. Limited Edition. Octavo, [iv], 58pp, [2]. Brown morocco, title in gilt on spine, presidential seal in gilt on front panel. Light wear at edges and along front seam. Top edge gilt. Housed in custom blue clamshell, title on spine on red morocco label. Limitation page states this is Number 21, from an unspecified, but limited edition publication. The book is inscribed by President Harry S. Truman on the front free end paper to Francis Biddle, the United States Attorney General during WWII and judge at the Nuremberg Trails. Inscription reads: "To Hon. Francis Biddle, with best wishes for a very Merry Christmas. Harry Truman. Dec 25, 1949." An exceptionally rare publication and piece of presidential history. Francis Biddle was the first member of the Roosevelt Administration that President Harry Truman sought to replace. According to Biddle, it was not easy for Truman to fire him face-to-face, but after Truman asked, he walked over to the President and said: "You see, it's not so hard." After his resignation, President Truman appointed Biddle to serve as a judge at the Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Biddle was serving as the United States Attorney General when President Roosevelt died in 1945. He held numerous posts in the Roosevelt Administration, including the Director of the National Labor Relations Board, United States Solicitor General and then Attorney General. As Attorney General during World War II, he pursed the prosecution of German spies, enforcing the decision to hold a military tribunal instead of trying them in civilian court. In Ex parte Quirin (1942), the supreme court ruled the military tribunals were lawful. This decision has been used as the legal basis for Guantanamo Bay military commissions. New Era In World Affairs, a signed limited edition printing, inscribed by President Harry Truman to Attorney General Francis Biddle. (illustrator). Signed.…

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Handwritten deed on folio sheet of laid paper. Double-sided with signature of Christopher Greenup attesting the validity of the deed on the verso. Deed records the transfer of property in Mercer, County in the District of Kentucky near Irish Station, from John Brown to Jared Cowan, one of 32 original settlers of Fort Harrod, Kentucky's first permanent settlement. Also contains the signatures of Kentucky pioneers John Cowan, James Brown and Thomas Speed. John Cowan, brother of Jared, and James Brown were two of the original 31 settlers of Harrodsburg, and along with Jared are listed as members of Harrod's Company of Kentucky Pioneers. Thomas Speed, brother of Farmington Plantation founder John Speed and uncle of Lincoln's future Attorney General James Speed, later served as a major in the Kentucky militia in the War of 1812 and as a U.S. congressman. Several folds to the sheet with splitting to the folds in various places. Old stain at bottom of the sheet obscuring several words of the document but not the signatures. Rare of autograph of Christopher Greenup (1750-1818), future third governor of Kentucky from 1804-1808. During the Revolution Greenup served as a lieutenant in the Continental Army and a Colonel in the Virginia militia. Greenup served as clerk of the first Kentucky statehood convention in 1784 and participated in each of the subsequent conventions leading to Kentucky statehood. Following statehood in 1792 Greenup in both the Kentucky Senate and House at various times and first ran for governor in 1800, finishing second. During his second run for governor in 1804, Greenup's popularity in the state allowed him to run unopposed for the office. In 1812 Greenup served as presidential elector for the ticket of Madison and Clinton and in 1813 served as Kentucky Secretary of State. In the context of the present document Greenup in his role as a lawyer is validating the deed on behalf of the Virginia Supreme Court. Jared Cowan is sometimes confused with his brother James who was killed by Indians in 1774. Jared however lived in Mercer County until his death in 1795, with his will attested and inventoried in 1796. An extraordinary document of early Kentucky. Signed by Author(s).…

(horizontal fold). with envelope (most of right side torn & missing). Written after Hardy stepped down from his government posts. "Your kind and sympathetic letter places me under additional obligations to you. I have received from you many kind expressions of esteem and regard since I have been in public life, but none of them have touched me more than your present letter. It is a source of much satisfaction to know that my friends think well of me though I have laid down the responsibility of public life. My doctors tell me that a perfectly quiet life while it will not restore my health entirely will do much good and I hope their diagnosis and predictions will be justified by events. Mr. Ross is so well known that I need say nothing about him. I was fortunate to be able to leave the Premiership in such good hands.". Signed by Author(s). …

The background to the present correspondence is dealt with exhaustively in C. J. W. Allen's 'The Law of Evidence in Victorian England' (1997) and David Bentley's 'English Criminal Justice in the 19th Century' (1998), chapters 17 ('The Campaign for a Prisoners' Evidence Act') and 18 ('Reform'). ONE: Autograph Letter Signed from Poland ('Harry Bodkin-Poland') to Harington ('His Honour Judge Sir Richard Harington Bart.'). 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. He begins by informing Harington that he has sent a letter to The Times, but that he fears it is 'too long for this busy time with the newspapers'. He asks him his opinion of 'the calm & sober judgment of Stephen', i.e. Sir Herbert Stephen (1857-1932). The letter continues: 'The Bill will not be in Committee for a week or ten days, so you have plenty of time to consider your letter to the A. G. | When notice of all the Amendments has been given the Lord Chancellor will no doubt I should think consult the Cabinet as to which, if any, of them the Government will accept. The L. C. Lord Cross, Lord James, Sir Matthew Ridley, Lord Salisbury, & others in Cabinet with actual experience, & the A. G. & S[olicitor]. G[eneral]. & men like Sir Edmund Clarke & others out of the Cabinet, ought to make a good working Bill.' He concludes by stating his point of view: 'The more I think of the subject, the more I am convinced that no safeguards can be of any use, & that everything must be left as at present to the good sense & judgment of the Court & Counsel.' TWO: Two Autograph documents by Poland, headed by him 'Rider A' and 'Rider B', giving his legal opinion for insertion in Item Three below. The first (2pp., 8vo) is in poor condition, aged and frayed. It begins: 'Poland thinks the instructing Solicitors or Counsel or both on behalf of prisioners is absolutely impracticable. See the Calendars of the C[entral]. C[riminal]. C[ourt]. the London Sessions & of large towns.' The second (1p., 12mo) is in fair condition, lightly aged. It begins: 'Poland thinks that care must be taken that prisoners should not be able to say that the Prosecutor & his witnesses have sworn so & so &c, & the Prisoner and his wife only stated so & so. The affirmation must be like the affirmation of people who object to be sworn.' THREE: Autograph Draft of Letter from Harington to the Attorney General (Sir Richard Webster). 9pp., 12mo. With emendations by both Harington and Poland, including directions by the latter for the insertion of the two riders (Item Two above). Begins: 'I have had a long talk with Poland over the prisoner's evidence bill, on the assumption that its principle is taken to be established & is not open to argument. We agree very decidedly that its operation should extend equally to every class of criminal case whether triable on indictment at a General Session of Oyer & Terminer or Quarter Sessions or at Police Courts & Petty Sessions'. Harington proceeds to argue his position forcefully and in great detail. At one point Poland writes: 'Poland cannot go so far as this & the danger of injustice already exists from incompetent judges Chairmen of Q. S. & Recorders & magistrates'. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington (1835-1911) of Ridlington, 11th Baronet. …
