Wer die Landkarte so oft mit seinen Träumen durchzieht, ist mit ihr vertraut, und darum mein Freund, ersuche ich Sie, mir einen kleinen Reiseplan von 5-6 Wochen im südlichen Frankreich entwerfen zu helfen, der die Wintermonate bis März in sich begreift [.]". - Steigentesch war Generaladjutant des Fürsten Schwarzenberg (1813) und in diplomatischer Mission unter anderem in Kopenhagen, St. Petersburg und Turin tätig. Bekannt wurde er als Autor galanter Salonlustspiele ("Convenienz und Liebe", 1798 oder "Der Reukauf", 1803) für das Wiener Hofburgtheater.

An den (namentlich nicht genannten) Fürsten Metternich: "Erlauben Euer Durchlaucht einem Menschen, der vom Rande des Grabes zurückkehrt, sich Ihnen mit dem Vertrauen und der Offenheit nähern zu dürfen, mit denen mir Euer Durchlaucht ehmals erlaubten zu Ihnen sprechen zu dürfen. Nach dem Ausspruch meiner Aerzte wird biß zum neuen Jahre die lezte Spur meiner langen und schmerzlichen Krankheit verwischt seyn, aber ich werde 52 Jahre alt, und meine Zukunft liegt zu unbestimmt vor mir, als daß ich nicht wagen sollte, Euer Durchlaucht gehorsamst zu bitten, mir zu sagen, ob ich Hoffnung habe, Euer Durchlaucht wieder anzugehören und den Rest meines Lebens noch einmal einem Staate widmen zu können, dessen Grösse Ihr Werk ist und dem ich, als meinem Wohlthäter, alles danke, was ich bin und was ich besitze. - Sollte dieß nicht seyn können, so fühlen Euer Durchlaucht, wie nöthig es für mich ist, einen Punkt zu wählen, wo mein Vermögen hinreicht, mir die Annehmlichkeiten zu verschaffen, die Gewohnheit und Alter bedürfen. - Ueberall wird mich die Erinnerung glücklich machen, dem größten Staatsmann unserer Zeit angehört zu haben und zuweilen seines Beifalls vielleicht nicht ganz unwürdig gewesen zu seyn [.]". - Spuren alter Faltung; am ersten Blatt recto oben rechts in Rötelstift numeriert "2". In literarischer Hinsicht machte sich Steigentesch um die Entwicklung des Wiener Salonlustspiels verdient. "Außer schöngeistigen Arbeiten widmete [er] den Kriegsvorkommnissen [.] warme Theilnahme, kehrte 1813, als Jedermann zu den Waffen griff, zur Armee zurück und wurde Generaladjutant des Feldmarschalls Fürsten von Schwarzenberg. Als solcher verstand er es, die Aufmerksamkeit des Fürsten Metternich auf sich zu lenken und wurde nun mit verschiedenen wichtigen Missionen betraut [.] Noch immer Günstling Metternich's ging er während der 'Hundert Tage' [.] in die Schweiz, die als Hauptbasis der Operationslinie dienen sollte, und erhielt darauf vom Kaiser als Anerkennung das Commandeurkreuz des Leopoldordens [.] Nach einer Erholungsreise durch Frankreich und Italien [.] wurde Steigentesch noch einige Male mit diplomatischen Aufträgen (Gratulation zur Vermählung des Kronprinzen von Preußen u. a.) betraut, mußte sich aber bald, durch bedenkliche Anzeichen der Wassersucht genöthigt, von allem öffentlichen Wirken zurückziehen, bewohnte im Sommer meist sein Landhaus Laa bei Wien und starb am 30. December 1826. - Steigentesch ist eine der interessantesten Figuren des beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts, in fast jeder Beziehung ein Product des napoleonisch-metternichischen Zeitalters" (ADB 35, 578).

An den namentlich nicht genannten Friedrich von Schiller, dem er für dessen Musenalmnach" oder Ihre Horen" einige Erstlinge meiner Muse" anbietet in dem Wunsche, durch Ihren Beyfall oder Tadel auf dem Wege zum Parnasse geleitet zu werden": [.] Auch forderte der Krieg meine Thätigkeit und meine Kräfte für einen andern Zweck, und auf dem Schlachtfelde pflückt die Fantasie keine Blume. Ich mußte mein Alter und das Gemälde meiner Lage voraus bemerken, um meine Lieder zu entschuldigen, die ungebildet durch die Kunst, wie sie das Gefühl dachte und niederschrieb, sich Ihnen nähern [.] Drey durchwachte Nächte und die Beschwerlichkeit der vorigen Tage mögen das Unzusammenhängende dieses Briefes entschuldigen, den ich in der ersten freyen Stunde, in dem Kampfe zwischen Schlaf und Wachen an Sie schreibe. Ich bin mit ganz Deutschland Ihr Verehrer | Steigentesch [.]". Umseitig folgt die Angabe seiner Anschrift: M. de Steigentesch, Premier Lieutenant du Régiment de Callenberg au Service de Sa Maj. L'Empereur et Roi, à Wetzlar". Von Steigenteschs poetischen Versuchen dürfte Schiller recht angetan gewesen sein, denn von 1797 bis 1800 erschienen immerhin sieben seiner Gedichte im Musenalmanach".
