Exemplaire enrichi d'un envoi d'Auguste Borget (encre un peu baveuse). Quelques vues de Hong-Kong, mais surtout de Canton et de Macao, gravées par Eugène Cicéri d'après les dessins faits sur place par Auguste Borget. Peintre-voyageur, Borget s'embarqua en 1836 pour un tour du monde qui durera 4 ans, et au cours duquel il résida près de dix mois en Chine du sud vers 1837-38. Il en rapporta des milliers de dessins et croquis pris sur le vif. L'un des grands intérêts de son oeuvre, outre le fait qu'il soit l'un des premier oeil occidental à rapporter la vie des Chinois sans se contenter de s'inspirer des illustrations locales, est que Borget dessine d'après nature, y compris parmi les populations modestes et paysannes. Proche ami de Balzac, il est aussi remarqué par Baudelaire dans son Salon de 1846. On retrouve ses toiles conservées dans divers musées français, mais aussi chinois (Hong Kong, Macao) et Américains (notamment au Peabody Essex Museum). Exemplaire lavé, six pages de la partie texte consolidées au papier Japon, première planche présentant des déchirures marginales restaurées. Large and heavy book (about 6 Kg).

Borget's fine lithog…raphic views of China, including five of Hong-Kong, and others relating to Macao and Canton. The plates are remarkable for the lack of that 'feeling of superiority of the Chinese, so characteristic of accounts from the 1840s. The artist observes with a fresh eye' (Lust). An important and early record of the landscape and people of Hong Kong, Macao, and Canton. Borget, who was a pupil of Jean-Antoine Gudin and a close friend of Honorà de Balzac, journeyed around the world in 1836, travelling through South America and Hawaii before reaching the China coast in August 1838. In the autumn of 1838, fellow artist William Prinsep went sketching with Borget in Macao, remarking that he found the Frenchman's portfolio 'rich with scenes from South America, Sandwich Islands and China, and he was a pleasant fellow into the bargain.' He continued his circumnavigation in July 1839 with a visit to Manila and then sailed for India via Singapore and the Straits of Malacca, eventually returning to Paris in the summer of 1840.
