Ses compétences en la matière lui ouvrirent les portes du monde scientifique : il publia une étude sur les fossiles du bassin du Locle et participa à la cartographie de la partie ouest du Jura, en intégrant la Commission géologique suisse de la Société helvétique des sciences naturelles.
