Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Brown calf, lavishly stamped in gilt on upper board and spine, ornate pattern repeated in blind on rear board; oblong, approx. 7.75 x 5 inches; approx. pp. 150, autographed friendship album, handwritten throughout by numerous hands. Boards lightly scuffed; front hinge cracked; FFEP neatly removed. A rich collection of quotes and signatures, offering numerous inks and callgraphic specimens, centered around Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, but including Bellevue, Cedar Falls, Marion -- and more -- with contributors hailing from a few distant towns, like Chicago and New Orleans. Entries are contributed from 1873-79, with the majority from 1875, a few addressed to "Mollie," but most addressed to "Mary," (Mary B. Woods) who seems to have cut a popular figure, as nearly every recto bears a contribution, and quite a few versos as well. Remarkably varied penmanship throughout (two in Pitman shorthand), all of it legible (even lovely), contributed by over a hundred men and women, offering pleasant thoughts and good wishes to their friend ("Long may you live / Happy may you be / Marry a good fellow / And live next door to me"), but not afraid to show their dark side ("Life is a waste of wearisome hours / Which seldom the rose of enjoyment adorns / And the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers / Is always the first to be touched by the thorns").…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Autograph manuscript; folio (205 x 320 mm); pp. [44], handwritten ink, with stage directions highlighted in red. Once a stitched pamphlet, the thread has since gone. Some light chipping along the edges (occasionally affecting text at top corner, but perfectly legible nonetheless) and spine of outermost leaf; some browning. First published in 1852, and with an appearance in Lacy's Acting Edition of 1867, this fair copy, with no corrections, was probably penned by a professional copyist for use in the theatre. A note on the front page reads: "A lapse of one year is supposed to take place between the acts. Time of representing, one hour and three quarters." Plunkett also wrote plays under the name of H. P. Grattan.…

The first is a transcription of the Gerrit Roosen's Mennonite Catechism; the second text is a 32-page collection of pious tales. The books were bound together with a signature inlaid from a letter by Abraham Leisy and pasted to the title page of the first volume. Bound in black finished cloth with 'Biblische Fragen' stamped to the front cover. The FFEP bears a note by Leisy's sister, Babette, reading 'Babette Leisy. / Cleveland. / Dieses Buch brachte meinen topfchen Diana [?] im Jahr 1895. von Deutschland, Friedelsheim [?] das hat alles [?] Bruders Abraham Leisy geschrieben.' 'The Abraham and Katarina Leisy family emi grated to America in 1855 from Friedelsheim, Germany. They settled on a farm outside of Donnellson, Iowa. The Leisys were members of the West Zion Mennonite Church of Donnellson.' (Mennonite Life, April 1976). Abraham's sons notably founded the Leisy Brothers' 'Union Brewery' in 1862 in Keokuk, Iowa. When the state of Iowa banned manufacture of alcoholic beverages in 1884, the brewery was moved to Peoria, Illinois and renamed 'Leisy Brewing Company,' a major regional beer producer and known as the last Mennonite-operated brewery in the U.S.…

Contemporary tan morocco gilt; 8vo (153x191 mm); approximately 75 leaves, nearly completely full (recto and verso) of manuscript contributions by numerous hands. With engraved title-page and cancel-slip over the imprint (the 1832 date in manuscript); and engraved vignettes to several leaves. Boards and spine scuffed; spine tips perished. A rich collection of poems and sentiments, collected in the early 1830s in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Richmond, Milton, Newton, Indianapolis (all, Indiana), Salem (New Jersey), and others. Most entries are initialed, but names do appear: Emma Roberts, Elizabeth Moore, Mary H. Roberts (Sarah's niece), Alexander Stokes, Lydia Stokes, Charles Westcombe. Includes one color manuscript drawing, a intricate labyrinth, or knot. Penmanship is legible, even lovely, throughout. A laid-in newspaper article offers a brief etymology of the word "Hoosier," remarking that it was first seen, in manuscript, in "Hoosier's Nest" a poem by John Finley of Richmond, in 1833 (it was then spelled "Hoosher"). Finley was the second mayor of Richmond, holding office from 1852 until his death in 1866. The final stanzas of the poem are copied out in this volume by an unknown contributor, who was quick to pick up the then very new word.…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Siskowitz (Siskovics) [Josef (József) von] Count. (1719-1783) Grundsatz Zu Erhaltung einer graden Linie bey denen in Front Marche vormarschirenden Officirs. Prague 1782 83. Calligraphic manuscript in brown ink on Dutch watermarked paper. Folio (320 x 204mm). [84] pages = [13 + 3 blank + 51 + 1 blank + 10 + 2 blank + 12]. Introductory 4- page letter in French in roman letters signed by the author at the end; main text in German penned in a neat gothic hand arranged in half-page columns; with tactical sketches in two of the ample blank margins. also some notes. Leaves with vertical folding marks in centre- page; contents inscription on recto of front blank leaf in a contemporary gothic hand: Grundsätze Ueber die Richtung mit mehreren Batallions von dem F[eld]z[eug]m[ei]ster Grafen von Siskowitz 1782. Contemporary sprinkled brown boards; gilt morocco title label in top of backstrip; ends of spine worn; contemporary armorial bookplate pasted inside frontcover. An unpublished Austrian 18th century treatise on linear tactics and function. The present manuscript interprets the principle of officers and non-commissioned officers having to maintain a straight line consisting of several ranks when advancing in battalion strength. (The Prussians mostly used the oblique order in most of their battles). This was based on the author s experiences during the Seven Years War (1756-63), when Prussian infantry advanced in three lines of battalions with three ranks apiece. Movement in the formation was very slow and a breakdown in cohesion likely unless the battalion was well trained. Described in detail are the various manoeuvers involved for directing marching columns, keeping proper distance, and wheeling at the right moment; two illustrations (one half-page) and 15 commentaries are contained in the ample blank margins. Siskowitz, an Hungarian staff officer from Szeged, made a rapid career in the Imperial Austrian army reaching the rank of lieutenant.general . He distinguished himself at the battle of Kolin in 1757, where he successfully carried out an order by Fieldmarshal von Daun to ambush a Prussian column with a force of 7000 men for which he was decorated and ennobled. The author died in Prague on 18th December 1783. The present manuscript was submitted to the attention of an unnamed military superior by way of an introductory letter in French on the subject. The 4-page extract , dated 12th February 1783, signed C[om]te.Siskovics , has been bound to precede the manuscript in this volume. The letter refers to an imperial order by Joseph II to align flags and marching columns of several battalions before advancing on the enemy; Siskowitz states that he considers it necessary to prescribe his method saying that he has no difficulty whatsoever to submit it to the recipient as an old friend if he wishes to make use of it. However, he stresses that his system should be carefully studied before it is put it into practice. Siskovitz insists the relevant maneuvers be carried out by officers and non-commissioned officers, never by other ranks, that they must be properly exercised before applied, and that it was not sufficient to rely on reading his instructions. He states that he demonstrated his method in 1782 with 13 batallions taking 2000 steps in 8 seconds. Both letter and manuscript are written on the same quality Dutch laid paper showing two different watermarks respectively : a larger with the legend PRO PATRIA surrounding a circular composition and a smaller one wih the the crowned initials GR of the paper maker within a round border of intertwined leaves. The Pro Patria or Maid of Dort watermark shows a seated maid, holding a hat on the point of a spear, and a rampant lion brandishing a sword and holding a bundle of arrows; both are surrounded by a palisade, a symbol of Holland maintaining liberty by force of arms. First draft of an autograph manuscript in French, with erasures and corrections, probably written by a diplomat or strategist, concerning the causes of Britain's defeat of France in India during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) and analysing different ways to restore France to power on Indian soil by an alliance with the sultan Haider Ali Khan (1722-1782), who ruled Mysore and a large part of southern India and was one of the greatest enemies of the British East India Company. According to the unidentified diplomat who wrote this text, Haider Ali Khan was the only one who was able to defeat the British or challenge their supremacy in India. In this manuscript he describes the best strategy not only to join Haider Ali Khan, but also to negotiate with the British people on profitable Indian trade for both parties.Slightly worn and frayed around the edges, first page slightly dust-soiled, but still an interesting autograph manuscript in good condition. Sewn with two small chords in the left upper and bottom corner. Pages: [7], [1 blank] pp.…
