Reprint. Condition: Gut. p. 48-57. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Folded lengthwise, covers rubbed, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: In recent years the scholary world has witnessed a renewal of interest in the Renaissance literary historian and poet, Julius Caesar Scaliger who is known to classicists (if at all) as the father of the illustrious textual critic, Joseph Justus Scaliger. Although Scaliger père has been called the founder of neo-classicism (at least in France), interest in him faded with the rise of Romanticism which still holds the world in its grip. Let us hope that interest in Scaliger reflects the dawning of a new period in history when the awareness that emotion unguided by reason (and that is the essence of Scaliger's thought) is an aberration of the human spirit which will manifest itself in art of inferior worth.
