In 1935, Backman wrote the popular science The Human Races and Modern Racial Problems, which is for the most part an overview of the knowledge of the time about physical differences between the races, their origin and spread. In the chapter Psychological Differences Between the Different Human Races, he seeks to demonstrate that these differences are rather small and that notions of the superiority of the European races above all others are unfounded. He refers instead to social factors as an explanation for these differences. He completely rejects the racial ideology adopted by the Nazis. "The Aryan propaganda rests on an incorrect foundation and on unscientific premises and is wrong from the start.".
