Originally premiered in the US in 1955. The plot tells the story of the imperious Mrs St Maugham and her granddaughter Laurel, a disturbed child under the care of Miss Madrigal, a governess, whose past life is a mystery. Rachel Gurney (1920Ğ2001) played Olivia in this 1956 production of The Chalk Garden. She is also remembered for the rle of Lady Marjorie Bellamy in the ITV classic drama 'Upstairs, Downstairs.'
