Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Early reprint ("Fifteenth Thousand" as stated upon title page; first published 1851). 370 pages. Hardcover: H 19.5cm x L 13.25cm. Contemporary brown cloth; several black ink stains to boards and slightly sunned spine; bumping and slight wear at spine ends and board corners. Strong toning to pastedowns…; three antiquarian ink inscriptions Port Gibson, Mississippi resident Samuel Briscoe, Esq. on front free endpaper with yet another on front flyleaf with those having some carry-through impressions onto successive title and Preface leaves; varied foxing (occasionally quite strong) throughout; several ink blots/stains obscuring some text on pages 119-120; top corners of pages 129-130 and 341-342 creased from past fold-down. Binding is firm. Preface by editor James Young who, as the title page notes, served as Grand Worthy Patriarch of the Grand Division of the Sons of Temperance in Kentucky. Features seventeen essays by various contributors including the renowned Dr. Daniel Drake of Cincinnati, and Methodist Episcopal Church theologian Reverend Thomas O. Summers. The book also has three notable Mississippi contributors: Reverend A.B. Longstreet of Oxford, twice president of University of Mississippi ("The Voice of Warning" - pages 41-60); Rev. William Winans of Woodville ("An O'er True Tale" - pages 113-118); and Rev. Philip P. Neely [Philip Phillips Neely] of Columbus ("Idella Pemberton, of the Prayer of Faith" - pages 291-298). As for the enthusiastic owner, a cemetery reference site notes a Samuel M. Briscoe (1849-1894) of Claiborne County, Mississippi and, although obviously only age 5 upon this book's publication, the penmanship and ink is certainly contemporary to 1850s-1870s.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book by an anonymous author is an insightful examination of the field of medicine, its history, and its practitioners. Beginning with the practice of medicine in the 16th century, the author illuminates the significant advancements made over the subsequent centuries, placing parti…cular emphasis on the substantial improvements made in areas such as surgery and obstetrics. The author discusses the emergence of medical quackery and the reasons why it continues to thrive, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based medicine over anecdotal claims. The book explores the history of various medical systems and practices, such as steam therapy, homeopathy, and the use of metallic tractors. It argues that despite advancements in scientific medicine, unscientific and often dangerous medical practices continue to persist, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and skepticism. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Before the terrifying prospects of internal strife, armed suppression and needless destruction descend fully upon us all.' - Whitney M. Young, Jr.). From the Preface: "The following Tribute to… the Memory of the eminent surgeon and physician, the late Dr. J. Marion Sims, who recently died in the city of New York, was spoken at a Memorial Meeting of the Medical and Surgical Society of Montgomery, and by that body ordered to be published in the Montgomery Advertiser. Not in Owen. Apparently not recorded on OCLC, which does locate one copy of an edition printed the same year in Philadelphia (National Library of Medicine), from the association's Transactions. Original printed blue-green front wrapper (detached, lacking rear wrapper). Very good. William O. Baldwin (1818-1886), born near the site where Montgomery, Alabama, was incorporated the following year, received little early formal education, but "read" medicine with a local physician in his teens before graduating from Transylvania University with a medical degree in 1837. He returned home to Montgomery to begin his practice which flourished; he was a founding member of the Medical Association of Alabama, serving as its president in 1851, as well as president of the American Medical Association in 1868. In addition, he attended to the sick and wounded on both sides throughout the Civil War and helped found the First National Bank of Montgomery, serving as its president. He published regularly in medical periodicals, gained membership to a number of medical societies and professional organizations, and served as a member of the board of trustees of the Medical College of Alabama, 1872-1886.
