Published to accompany the travelling exhibition held at Kirchheim unter Teck (1999), Weimar (2000), and Mariémont, Belgium (2000), the volume places Dorfner's work within the broader development of German Einbandkunst, tracing the transition from the ornamental vocabulary of Jugendstil and Henry van de Velde to the functional and geometric aesthetics of the Bauhaus. Contributions by Ludwig Ehrler, Mechthild Lobisch, Micheline de Bellefroid, Michael Siebenbrodt, Helma Schaefer, Bernd Löffler, Nina Wiedemeyer, Andreas Mayr, Dag Ernst Petersen, Fritz Wiese, Felicitas Marwinski, Harriett Watts, and Hans-Peter Willberg examine Dorfner's biography and artistic milieu in Kirchheim, his activity at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Bauhaus, the establishment of his own bindery and Fachschule für kunstgewerbliche Buchbinderei, his collaboration with the Reiher-Verlag, and his later career after 1925, alongside broader studies of German fine bookbinding, private-press printing (Pressendrucke), and twentieth-century book design.
