Revised edition of this beautifully illustrated book on the history of balloon ascensions by the author and his brother, Gaston, as they were the most renowned balloonists of the Mid-19th-Century. Gaston Tissandier (1843-1899), was a noted chemist, meteorologist, aviator, and editor, whose works focused solely on scientific amusements as a way to encourage and promote scientific learning. He founded and edited the scientific magazine, La Nature, and even managed to escape the 1870 siege of Paris by flying a balloon, and in 1883 created the first powered airship by attaching a Siemens electric motor to an airship. Albert Tissandier (1839-1906) was a noted adventurer, aviator, architect, and archaeologist who collaborated with his brother on the magazine La Nature. Add to basketUnbound. Condition: Good. First Edition. Single sided printed hand bill, approximately 95mm x 265mm in size. Browned, trimmed quite closely, some creasing and a couple of tiny nicks. The printer was probably [Giles] Balne (fl.1799-1838) of Gracechurch Street, London (BBTI). The 'Mr. Green' was almost certainly Charles Green (1785-1864), a professional balloonist between 1821 and 1840, this being his two hundred twenty-fourth aerial voyage. Later that year (November 1836), Green, with Mason and Holland, flew from Vauxhall Gardens London in the 'Royal Vauxhall'. The flight covered a record distance (until 1907) of 480 miles, landing in Germany after eighteen hours. Green was the first to use "coal-gas" for lift (1821), the first to use a drag rope for ballast and he made five cross-channel attempts, with three being successful, and two ending in the sea (information from ballooninghistory). Admission was two shillings and sixpence, with the Coldstream and Quadrille bands also attending. See Altick, 'The Shows of London', page 322 Size: 4to. Ephemera.

First edition of this cheeky and satirical semi-autobiographical memoir by the superstar actress documenting her adventures in an escaped balloon over the L'Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878 with her lover, Clairin (1843-1919), who had painted the famed salon Portrait of Bernhard (1844-1923). Lured back in 1878 to the Comedie Francaise, the brilliant star with a chancy temper had been requested by the balloon's owner to make the maiden voyage ascent, but a storm ripped it from its moorings, and they eventually landed outside Paris. Subsequently, she refused to pay the 100 Francs fine as she had left Paris without permission.
