These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Balmain in the spring and fall of each year. This example is in good condition, with the right margin toned. It makes a wonderful document for any lover of fashion.

"Me voici pour quelques jou…rs en Italie. Le temps maussade à Milan paraissait normal, n'est-ce pas la ville du brouillard, mais quand on est à Florence sous la bruine, on en éprouve comme le sentiment d'une injustice. Et je me vais imaginant la ville comme je l'aime, dorée au soleil tardif de novembre, toutes ses lourdes façades de pierre encore tièdes - et ses statues comme vivantes - mais hélas il n'en est rien et j'en suis mélancolique. La Toussaint à St Jean fut bien triste [.]. J'ai toujours un serrement de coeur quand je retourne à St Jean que je ne reconnais presque plus. J'étais presque soulagé de partir! [.]. Je rentre moi-même cette nuit. Demain enterrement de Nacer au cimetière musulman. Ce sera très triste. Je ne sais même pas si on a le droit de lui mettre des fleurs. Je vois le petit groupe que nous formerons, avec son beau-frère qui vient du Maroc dans ce sinistre faubourg de Bobigny. L'Imam de la Mosquée de Paris y mettra une note de grandeur - et peut-être de sérénité - mais serons nous autorisés à le voir enterrer, je n'en suis pas sûr. Ainsi aurai-je perdu un serviteur bon et dévoué comme on en trouvait qu'au Maroc d'autrefois. Et je crois que son humble présence restera toujours dans mon coeur [.]". "Je suis ici depuis 4 jours. Au début fort mal en point, je n'ai guère quitté ma chambre, allant du lit à la chaise longue de plastique bleue modèle…Knoll revu par le Club Méditerranée, qui permet de brunir en se balançant distraitement sur la petite terrasse qui prolonge ma chambre. Enfin hier, je me suis décidé à m'habiller [.]". Un couple d'amis parisiens lui est tombé dessus, "que j'ai convié à un dîner scandinave" dont il détaille le menu. "Le tout dans le jardin lentement envahi par la nuit où de grands photophores apportés de N. York diffusaient la lumière dansante des bougies sur des assiettes de bois danoises des couverts de bambou de Thaïlande et des verres suédois - La musique, qui nous provenait des baies ouvertes du salon était irlandaise, le café brésilien, la vodka polonaise (Bless the Pope !) et la conversation avait juste ce qu'il fallait de langoureuses vacheries pour que la soirée soit très parisienne [.]". Mais réveillé à 4 heures du matin "par les hurlements sacro-saints de mon voisin le muezzin d'une petite mosquée de quartier, qui ne paye pas de mine dans la journée, mais dont la voix nocturne emplit d'un tonnerre coranique notre quartier abandonné au sommeil [.]". Cocteau parle du bracelet montre qui continue à vivre au poignet du soldat tué - dans les poussières des vains cercueils, les pauvres jadis pieusement sacrifiés en offrande votive brillent encore du même éclat. Faudrait-il donc souhaiter cet éclat glacial, cette dure pureté pour se vouloir survivre ? Mais à la je crois deuxième page de ce monologue d'affection, je me trouve rejoindre le bataillon des pompiers qui commence à enchanter les amateurs d'art. Ces pompiers là n'éteignent plus le feu [.]".Il évoque aussi la politique française : "Monsieur Chirac a été bien imprudent, dans sa course au pouvoir, de démolir Giscard comme il l'a fait ! [.]". Il décrit avec poésieson environnement chinois, son hôtel au charme victorien, les navires et…jonques de la baie, la fête de la pleine lune d'août, les voiles "rouge laque" dans les rues, les milliers de gratte-ciel, etc. Il n'achète plus d'antiquités chinoises, mais "j'ai trouvé un nouvel intérêt dans l'achat de meubles chinois modernes pour la maison de Marrakech". Il décrit des fauteuils de rottin philippins, des caches-pots chinois, des stores vénitiens, etc, destinés à cette même maison. Balmain décrit ensuite les changements modernes de la ville, ses commerces anarchiques, les ruelles malodorantes, les oeufs de cent ans, les enfants en guenilles, les chats galeux, les fabricants de chemises chinois, etc. Il ajoute "mes pensées pour M. Burma", "j'ai changé d'amis = non plus Lord Balantyne, mais Sir Chivas Regal (plus raffiné et plus cher)" et donne rendez-vous le 31 au soir à Christine et Jasmine, à Aix-les-bains. Grand couturier, il fonde sa propre maison de couture en 1945, qu'il dirige jusqu'à sa mort survenue en 1982. Il a, en outre, créé de nombreux costumes pour le théâtre et le cinéma.
