Couverture souple. Condition: Bon. Edition originale. Né sous François II, Maximilien de Béthune, devenu duc de Sully en 1606, est mort à la fin du règne de Louis XIII. Mais, sur ses quatre-vingt-deux années de vie, il n'en a passé qu'une douzaine au pouvoir auprès d'Henri IV, et il n'a été tout-puissant que pendant cinq ans, de… 1605 à 1610. Cette courte période lui a suffi pour donner une vigoureuse impulsion à la reconstruction économique, financière et matérielle du royaume après quarante ans de guerres civiles. On lui doit notamment la place Royale (place des Vosges) et la place Dauphine à Paris, la remise en état des voies de communication, la construction de ponts et de canaux, la rénovation du réseau des fortifications dans les provinces frontières, le développement de la cartographie militaire, de l'industrie d'armement et de la marine en Méditerranée, et un budget en excédent. Surtout, il a instauré un nouveau style de gouvernement, autoritaire et centralisateur : soixante ans avant Colbert, il a établi une première forme de «monarchie administrative». Il est le père de l'«Etat de finance». Très présente dans la mémoire collective, l'image de Sully est en grande partie mythique et ne reflète que très imparfaitement sa véritable personnalité : Maximilien de Béthune n'a pas été une sorte de ministre de l'Agriculture avant la lettre, ni un mentor grincheux perpétuellement occupé à morigéner un souverain dévergondé. Premier en date des grands ministres du Grand Siècle, il fut le seul protestant et le seul gentilhomme, le seul aussi qui ait été l'ami du roi et qui ait été frappé par la disgrâce. Il est également le seul noble d'épée qui se soit aventuré dans les arcanes de la gestion administrative et financière, d'ordinaire réservée aux gens de robe, et qui y ait personnellement acquis une réelle compétence, situation rendue possible par l'instruction soignée qu'il avait reçue. En retraçant cette destinée exceptionnelle, les auteurs apportent une contribution majeure à l'histoire d'une période décisive pour notre histoire : le passage de la Renaissance à l'âge classique et l'émergence de l'Etat moderne. Publié par Fayard en 1997, broché avec une couverture souple en bon état, format 22x4x4 cm , 698 pages.
