Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. A definitive study of the defenses of Washington during the Civil War. Washington, D. C. , during the American Civil War was the center of the Union war effort, which rapidly turned it from a small city into a major capital with full civic infrastructure and strong defenses. The shock of Union defeat at First Bull Run, with demoralized troops wandering the streets of the capital, caused President Abraham Lincoln to order extensive fortifications and a large garrison. That required an influx of troops, military suppliers and building contractors, which would set up a new demand for accommodation, including military hospitals. The abolition of slavery in D. C. In 1862 also attracted many freedmen to the city. Except for one attempted invasion by Confederate cavalry leader Jubal Early in 1864, the capital remained impregnable. E-051; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Barnard, loose as issued in original blindstamped green cloth gilt, occasional short tears to folds, light stains to covers, a very good example. Part of the large body of interesting literature relating to schemes to build either a railway or a canal through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Barnard was a notable military engineer and was superintendent on the construction of the Delaware breakwater and improvements on the Hudson River and New Jersey harbours and works at the mouth of the Mississippi. His selection as chief engineer on the project proposed by the Tehuantepec Railroad Company of New Orleans came about as a result of his survey of the battlefields around Mexico City during the Mexican War.
