Hardcover. Condition: Good. Leather. Folio. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC. 1871. 152 pages plus 30 fold-out plates. Professional Papers of the Corps of Engineers, US Army, No. 20. Ex-library item from US Army Corps of Engineers library. Bound in 3/4 brown leather with red cloth boards and titles present to the front… board. Bookplate present to the reverse of the front board, name present to the FFEP, US Army stamps present to the title page. Several closed tears present along the folds (see last photo). Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. A definitive study of the defenses of Washington during the Civil War. Washington, D. C. , during the American Civil War was the center of the Union war effort, which rapidly turned it from a small city into a major capital with full civic infrastructure and strong defenses. The shock of Union defeat at First Bull Run, with demoralized troops wandering the streets of the capital, caused President Abraham Lincoln to order extensive fortifications and a large garrison. That required an influx of troops, military suppliers and building contractors, which would set up a new demand for accommodation, including military hospitals. The abolition of slavery in D. C. In 1862 also attracted many freedmen to the city. Except for one attempted invasion by Confederate cavalry leader Jubal Early in 1864, the capital remained impregnable. E-051; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Barnard, loose as issued in original blindstamped green cloth gilt, occasional short tears to folds, light stains to covers, a very good example.
