Mounted in the illustrated card covers showing a line drawing of a Welsh hill landscape is a single A4 sheet folded in four which at first unfolding reveals a photograph of a man (Peter Barnfield?) holding an empty frame before the same landscape and, when completely opened; a photograph of a half naked woman (Ginny Barfield?) holding a pot seated before a blank white window on a dais with the photographed landscape marked as if by a map grid on its riser and a poem entitled Distant Hills? Name in small neat hand on inside cover.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. The third of Peter's books of memories of railway journeys, this one covering south and mid Wales and largely covering lines and routes which are no longer available to rail travellers. Nostalgic and funny by turns and accompanied by a superb photographic record of everything, every picture bar one being taken by Peter himself. I really enjoyed all of it, if I had to pick a favourite section it would probably be that which describes the "Seven Mile Bank" on the Brecon and Merthyr - what a railway that was!

Designed and printed by Nicolas McDowell using computer generated Bulmer types and polymer blocks to print the book by letterpress. Printed on paper hand-made by Frances McDowall, the furnish using a mixture of Abaca and Jute, with an admixture of reeds and irises for the endpapers. Illustrated paper covered boards, black spine titling. Housed in a folding slipcase covered in burnt orange cloth, lined with blue Ingres paper. Folio, 335 x 230 mm, pp. [1-6] 7-57 [colophon] [2, blank] with images throughout produced using a variant of the nineteenth century printmaking technique known as cliché-verre. An illustrated 'good wishes' card laid in and signed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and Dr Peter Wakelin. A book and slipcase in Fine condition. The Affectionate Shepheard was first published anonymously in London in 1594, when its author was 20 years of age. Thge book includes an essay by Dr Peter Wakelin entitled 'The Enigmatic Shepherd: the sweet & bitter love of Richard Barnfield (1574-1627)'.
