The result of a holiday in the Alps in Lubbock's twenties with physicist John Tyndall and biologist Thomas Henry Huxley that developed a continuing interest in "what forces had raised the mountains, had hollowed out the lakes and directed the rivers." He offers a short statement of the views of great authorities even where they differ, "in a form which might be useful to those travelling in Switzerland." Born into a banking family, Sir John was also a Liberal Member of Parliament and made valuable contributions to archaeology, biology, and ethnography.
