Barthel (1697-1771), Renovator der Kanonistik in Deutschland, promovierte in Rom zum Doktor beider Rechte, bevor er ab 1727 in Würzburg als Regens des Seminars St. Kilian und als Professor des kanonischen Rechts an der Universität wirkte. "Seit 1738 Kanonikus beim Stift Haug in Würzburg, wurde er 1744 Geheimer Rat und 1754 Dechant dieses Stiftes [.] An der Universität führte er eine neue Lehrmethode des kanonischen Rechts ein" (DBE). "Seine gediegenen kanonistischen Abhandlungen zeichnen sich im Unterschied zur älteren scholastischen Betrachtungsweise durch ihre historisch-pragmatische Methode aus.
