After proving themselves, Straker's men prepare to join the battle in the north of Algeria. On the way, they are struck by overhead bombers, who now know they're on their way. Jill Bensted, the Army nursing sister had been previously involved with his General Ewart but succumbed to Straker's charm, though she would live to regret it. Frenchmen Labiche, Prefect of the Department of Nord Est, and Vervins, Chief of Police, sit, drinking wine awaiting their arrival in North Africa and doesn't appreciate Straker taking charge on arrival. It's not long before Straker earns a British D.S.O. and is promoted, becoming known as 'Punch-Through Straker'. When two of the Frenchmen die, in suspicious circumstances Straker evicts Labiche from his home and moves in. By military aviation writer Richard Townshend Bickers (1917-?).
