Before the first round-the-world voyage was made by Magellan's expeditionary force, Christopher Columbus had already accomplished a transatlantic crossing in what could be termed a walnut-shell---for the Santa Maria with her crew of 52 men was probably only 56 feet long, 26 feet wide and had just 3,228 square feet of sail.
