Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "Throughout Inner Cities of Gulls, whether penetrating the natural world or the historical one, whether in love poems or in poems that explore other 'inner weather' of the human heart, JP Dancing Bear reveals a certain kind of earned wisdom. Sometimes summoning the voices of mythical persons, sometimes raising his own powerful voice, this poet lends insight to our sometimes faulty assumptions about the way life should be lived. 'I could change light / and substance into any gift,' claims the speaker of 'The Dark Current.' The poems in this compelling collection are themselves such a gift." Andrea Hollander Budy"JP Dancing Bear writes new myths for our times through a cornucopia of characters, from Prospero as a TV weatherman to Jesuses of the street. Inner Cities of Gulls contains powerfully moving poems that are restlessly inventive and always life affirming. They celebrate both the natural world and the trance of traffic, displaying his trademark range." Pascale PetitJP Dancing Bear is the author of Conflicted Light (Salmon Poetry, 2008), Gacela of Narcissus City (Main Street Rag, 2006), Billy Last Crow (Turning Point, 2004) and What Language (Slipstream, 2002), winner of the 2001 Slipstream Prize. His poems have been published in New Orleans Review, National Poetry Review, Knockout, Bateau, diode, DIAGRAM, Verse Daily and many others. His work has been ten times nominated for a Pushcart Prize and once for a Forward Prize. He is currently working on translations of the works of the Nicaraguan poet Blanca Castellon and the Mexican poet Oscar Wong. He is the editor of the American Poetry Journal and Dream Horse Press and the host of "Out of Our Minds", a weekly poetry program on the public radio station KKUP. Winner of the 2001 Slipstream Prize, J. P. Dancing Bear writes poems full of colorful characters that explore humanity and bring new insight to life. An excellent collection."Terese Svoboda"Using myth, politics, nature, and art, J.P. Dancing Bear asks questions that can only be asked through poetry. These accomplished and various poems feature sure-handed lines and vivid images. J.P. Dancing Bear has an ear for 'the inner tones of the world' and an eye that sees 'aspens turning into an imitation of fire' and 'bullfrog stars hunger[ing] for crickets.' Conflicted Light reveals the vitality of contemporary American verse."Natasha SajeJ. P. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Fish Singing Foxes is two books in one. Half of the book is an exploration of Gacelas, a series of poems that Federico Garcia Lorca wrote with a then modern take on Ghazals. Dancing Bear advances the form with ghazel-like leaps of imagery and recurring themes. He uses the form to navigate a modern world of consumerism, social apathy and over-hype. The rhythms and repetitions draw the reader to join and lend their voice to the work. The other half of the book, experiments with form by creating a new series of poems that use a single line from a contemporary poets poem to create a new poem. Once again, Dancing Bear displays a mastery of words to which he can grow images using a single grafted branch while also paying homage to the original poem and author, while maintaining a level of gravitas coupled with whimsy. Throughout Fish Singing Foxes, Dancing Bear injects a sharp sense of humor that knows both the borders of playfulness and gallows humor. He presents two very different forms that reveal his revelry of language and image. Fish Singing Foxes is a delightful collection of two series of poems. One series borrows a line of poetry from a contemporary poet using it as an "on-ramp," a point of departure, and creates an entirely different poem from it. The second series serve Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
