This paper captures the joint urban warfare phenomenon of the past decade, its emergence in the field of military art, and the directions that it will likely take. Developing alongside joint urban warfare doctrine is the transformation of the U.S. Army. The transformation will provide the Joint Force Commander new roles and missions for Army forces in the joint team. The study recommends strategic descent as one such role. The descent describes a single powerful blow-a coup de main-delivered at the outset of a campaign or operation. The descent can provide an early decision in the conflict or seize the initiative for the joint force before it completely arrives into theater. The objective forces of the Army will be capable of non-littoral descents in particular, given their new strategically responsive capabilities. Will the U.S. military intervene to stabilize the Caucasus by 2010 This monograph explores this question. It introduces the reader to the Caucasus' complexity and presents factors affecting a military intervention decision. It presents three likely contingencies that may require U.S. force intervention before 2010: peacekeeping in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, stabilization of the Georgian or Azerbaijani governments, or prevention of ethnic cleansing. It also provides a summary of each contingency compared to the 1999 National Security Strategy's criteria for deploying U.S. forces to assess the probability of intervention. The monograph is a passport to the Caucasus, removing the mystery from it to assess its operational challenges. For one, we are increasingly interested in proving actual program artifacts, not just abstractions thereof or core algorithms. The programs we want to verify today are thus longer, including whole classes and modules. As we consider larger programs, the number of cases to be considered in a proof increases. The creative and insightful parts of a proof can easily be lost in scores of mundane cases. Another problem with paper-and-pen proofs is that the features of the programming languages we employ in these programs are plentiful, including object-oriented organizations of data, facilities for specifying di erent c- trol ow for rare situations, constructs for iterating over the elements of a collection, and the grouping together of operations into atomic transactions. These language features were designed to facilitate simpler and more natural encodings of programs, and ideally they are accompanied by simpler proof rules. But the variety and increased number of these features make it harder to remember all that needs to be proved about their uses. As a third problem, we have come to expect a higher degree of rigor from our proofs. A proof carried out or replayed by a machine somehow gets more credibility than one that requires human intellect to understand.
