Abebooks seller: ITSHISTORY, Brentwood, TN. $8,500. INCLUDED ARE SPEECHES, DISCUSSIONS and LETTERS PRESENTED AT THE PROCEEDINGS. BACKGROUND. By APRIL 1865, the Civil War had effectively ended and Emancipation was duly given to black slaves. And yet, the right to vote was still withheld from black men and all women of any race or color. In MAY 1866, the first meeting of the newly formed American Equal Rights Association (AERA) was held to develop strategies to set into law UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE, the right to vote regardless of complexion, race or sex of the person. MAY 1867, a year later, the call to attend the First Anniversary Meeting of the AERA was issued, stating: "The object of this Association is to SECURE EQUAL RIGHTS TO ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS, ESPECIALLY THE RIGHT OF SUFFRAGE, IRRESPECTIVE OF RACE, COLOR OR SEX. American Democracy has interpreted the Declaration of Independence in the interest of slavery, restricting suffrage and citizenship to a white male minority. The black man is still denied the crowning right of citizenship, even in the nominally free States, though the fires of civil war have melted the chains of chattelism, and a hundred battle-fields attest his courage and patriotism. Half our population are disfranchised on the ground of sex; and though compelled to obey the law and taxed to support the government, they have no voice in the legislation of the country. This Association, then, has a mission to perform, the magnitude and importance of which cannot be over-estimated." DEMAND FOR THE VOTE! _____ JULY 1848, at the first Woman's Rights Convention, Seneca Falls, NY, ELIZABETH CADY STANTON fiercely defended woman suffrage (woman's right to vote), saying, "SUFFRAGE IS THE RIGHT BY WHICH ALL OTHERS SHALL BE OBTAINED!" IN THIS BOOKLET, SEE PAGE 9, SPEECH OF ELIZABETH CADY STANTON (10pp). She said, "SUFFRAGE IS A NATURAL RIGHT as necessary to man under government, for the protection of person and property, as are air and motion to life," and further "[voting] --the right of self-government. THAT LITTLE PIECE OF PAPER DROPPED INTO A BOX is the symbol of equality, of citizenship, of wealth, virtue, education, self-protection, dignity, independence and power --the mightiest engine yet placed in the hand of man for the uprooting of ignorance, tyranny, superstition, the overturning of thrones, altars, kings, popes, despotisms, monarchies and empires." AND SEE speeches by Sojourner Truth, a former slave, on PAGES 63, 66. Believing that WOMEN SHOULD HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF RIGHTS AS MEN, she said, "There is a great stir about colored men getting their rights, but not a word about the colored women; and if colored men get their rights, and not colored women theirs, you see the colored men will be masters over the women, and it will be just as bad as it was before. So I am for keeping the thing going while things are stirring; because if we wait till it is still, it will take a great while to get it going again . . . I want women to have their rights . I am above eighty years old; it is about time for me to be going. I have been forty years a slave and forty years free and would be here forty years more to have equal rights for all." Then SOJOURNER SANG A SONG, its lyrics are recorded in print in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, May 18, 1867, pp 6. (see newspapers. com). Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York; Edward Arnold, London, 1901
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. New York and London, octavo, xxiii, [1], 638 p., plus 34 hand-drawn and photographic plates of fossils, with explanatory leaves, and 123 text illustrations. ***CONTENT: Charles Emerson Beecher (1856-1904) was an American paleontologist most famous for his studies of the ventral anatomy of trilobites. He is also noted for his work on corals, brachiopods and crustaceans, and for his contributions to evolution. This very scarce volume contains some of his most important papers on the above topics. An opening chapter "General Evolution" considers the origin and significance of spines; the following eight chapters discuss the structure and development of trilobites, including much on the ventral structures of Triarthrus; ten chapters describe the development of brachiopoda; and three chapters address the development of corals. The abundant and striking illustrations greatly enhance the understanding of the text material. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, near-Fine copy bound in the original textured dark green cloth, with a gilt Yale insignia on the front cover and gilt lettering and decoration on the backstrip. The covers and spine are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. Cover and spine gilt bright. Joints and hinges fully intact, binding very firm. The text pages and illustrations are immaculate: fresh, clean, and bright. No foxing or stains. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a superb copy of an important work; I could not find any other copies for sale online. Nickles 86. Not in BMNH. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
Published by The State of Pennsylvania, 1874
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Harrisburg, octavo, variously paged; hundreds of maps and illustrations. ***CONTENT: The Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, directed by J. Peter Lesley, State Geologist, is celebrated as "the most remarkable series of reports ever issued by any survey" (Merrill, 1924). Unprecedented in their quality, detail, and comprehensiveness, these reports provide a 'treasure trove' of geologic, economic and historic information about Pennsylvania and surrounding States during the 'Golden Age' of industrial growth and development in the mid-late 19th century. Then, Pennsylvania supplied much of the natural resources and manufactured commodities necessary for western expansion. Understandably, many of the volumes describe the abundant economic resources of the State: vast deposits of anthracite and bituminous coal, as well as oil and gas, iron ores, limestone and other industrial materials. Information is provided on mine locations, mining equipment and methods, transportation, etc. More than 40 of these volumes document the geology and resources of specific counties in Pennsylvania, including: Adams, Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Berks, Blair, Bradford, Bucks, Butler, Cambria, Cameron, Carbon, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Elk, Fayette, Forest, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Huntingdon, Indiana, Jefferson, Juniata, Lancaster, Lawrence, Lehigh, McKean, Mercer, Mifflin, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Perry, Philadelphia, Pike, Potter, Schuylkill, Snyder, Somerset, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Venango, Washington, Wayne, and Westmoreland, not to mention other areas and regions. Other volumes discuss the Permian and Carboniferous plant fossils of Pennsylvania and adjacent states, and Paleozoic invertebrate fossils: trilobites, eurypterids, brachiopods, corals, crinoids, etc. Several volumes describe the State's minerals, others report on chemical analyses, and three volumes catalogue the geological collections of the State Museum. There isn't much that these comprehensive volumes don't consider! Seven atlas volumes have maps of the "Anthracite fields"; other atlases show colored county geologic maps, etc. Most county reports have map pockets with maps, plus maps in the text and numerous figures. ***CONDITION: These volumes are in the original brown cloth covers, and most are in VERY GOOD or better condition, some are FINE. The original backstrips bear gilt lettering; a few of the atlas volumes are lacking their (flimsy) backstrips, and the covers are loose, but the maps are sound. The volume text pages and illustrations are typically near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or dampstains. The bindings are strong. The atlas maps and pocket maps are folded and are well preserved. Most of these volumes were deaccessioned from a New England library and have paper shelf labels on the lower spines, and small stamps on preliminary pages. I have not collated all the volumes, but I am confident that most, if not all, are fully complete. In my 50 years as a geologist, I have not seen a set of this size and quality offered for sale. Do not hesitate to contact me "Olde Geologist Books" with any questions. Domestic and international shipping will be extra, but only at my cost, about $100 for US addresses.
