Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. New York and London, octavo, xxiii, [1], 638 p., plus 34 hand-drawn and photographic plates of fossils, with explanatory leaves, and 123 text illustrations. ***CONTENT: Charles Emerson Beecher (1856-1904) was an American paleontologist most famous for his studies of the ventral anato…my of trilobites. He is also noted for his work on corals, brachiopods and crustaceans, and for his contributions to evolution. This very scarce volume contains some of his most important papers on the above topics. An opening chapter "General Evolution" considers the origin and significance of spines; the following eight chapters discuss the structure and development of trilobites, including much on the ventral structures of Triarthrus; ten chapters describe the development of brachiopoda; and three chapters address the development of corals. The abundant and striking illustrations greatly enhance the understanding of the text material. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, near-Fine copy bound in the original textured dark green cloth, with a gilt Yale insignia on the front cover and gilt lettering and decoration on the backstrip. The covers and spine are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. Cover and spine gilt bright. Joints and hinges fully intact, binding very firm. The text pages and illustrations are immaculate: fresh, clean, and bright. No foxing or stains. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a superb copy of an important work; I could not find any other copies for sale online. Nickles 86. Not in BMNH. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Lot of 36 titles from the Arno / New York Times Series The American Negro, His History and his literature. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning… / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning. Uncommon to find so many in one place. Shipping will be extra ! pickup available in NYC. TItles are: Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive and Rising Rev. William J.
