Dass August Behm (1880-1952) "ohne Abitur die Immatrikulation an der TH Karlsruhe gelang, verdankte er der Fürsprache seines Physiklehrers und der Veröffentlichung ihres gemeinsamen Fachartikels "Üb…er die elektrische Batterie". Bereits im zweiten Semester wurde sein Professor, Dr. Otto Lehmann (1855 bis 1922), der Entdecker der flüssigen Kristalle, auf den geschickten Studenten Behm aufmerksam. Behm wurde neben Dr. Hermann Sieveking sein zweiter Assistent. Behms Hochschulzeit von 1902 bis 1904 war zwar kurz, aber - vom fehlen - den Studienabschluss abgesehen - erfolgreich. Er hatte sich dem noch jungen Fachgebiet der Akustik zugewandt. Gemeinsam mit Sieveking konstruierte Behm ein Gerät, mit dem der Luftschall analysiert werden konnte (Sonometer). Das technische Problem, die Schallwellen sichtbar zu machen, löste er auf verblüffend einfache Art mit Hilfe einer Stimmgabelkonstruktion. Er vergrößerte die Schallschwingungen einer Stimmgabel, indem er einen Glasfaden an eine der Stimmgabelzinken klebte. Den Glasfaden verschmolz er am Ende zu einem Kügelchen, mit dem das Licht einer Taschenlampe gebündelt und auf Fotopapier fixiert wurde. Hierfür erhielt Behm ab 1906 Patentschutz. Im Labor der Firma Grünzweig & Hartmann (jetzt Saint-Gobain ISOVER G+H AG) analysierte er damit die schalldämmenden Eigenschaften verschiedener Baustoffe."
