Contains 656 pages over the five volumes with continuous pagination showing 321 full-page single-sided monochrome photographs. Descriptive text giving information required…for the comprehension and enjoyment of the photograph appears beneath each plate. It is a special feature of this work that each photograph appears on a right-hand page, and that no matter is printed at the back. This has enabled the publisher's to produce the work in such a manner as to secure the highest excellence of art reproduction, an incidental advantage of the plan thus adopted is that no twisting or turning of the book is required in order to examine the pictures. This series was obtainable only by subscription and not obtainable through ordinary Booksellers. Volume 1 still has the Subscription note by the publisher's tipped-in.
