This book, originally written in 1826, is an anthropomorphic story about the brief but eventful life of a butterfly that explores a variety of social settings through the lens of a young butterfly. It is interesting both as an allegory of human experiences and attitudes as it examines themes of mortality, vanity, and cruelty. The author creates a complex and ultimately tragic main character whose story provides the narrative impetus to explore these and other concerns. This work is also an interesting example of how some early-19th century authors wrote for children, using accessible language while also subtly touching on more complex themes like social critique and ethical dilemmas. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Poor. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. This compact selection of poems by Mary Elliott (1794-1870) includes a number of religious, moral, and sentimental poems, but is notable for the anti-slavery, egalitarian poem "The Negro and Her Master" on pp. 12-13.The book is in the original quarter-leather binding with the title in gilt on the spine, and paper-covered boards that were originally marbled, but are now so frayed at the edges and faded that the marbling is barely distinguishable. The frontispiece and title page are missing, and the book begins with the first poem, 'The Sunflower' on p.4. Internally pages are slightly wrinkled (probably due to damp at some stage) and a good deal.
