This book provides an in-depth analysis of how the political and religious atmosphere of 16th-century Italy impacted social customs in the region, especially focusing on the influence of Pope Clement VIII. Through descriptive prose, the author illustrates the splendor and opulence of papal celebrations, ceremonies, and city festivals, while also discussing the political motivations and symbolism behind many of these displays. The book sheds light on an under-researched area of Renaissance history, offering new insights into the complex relationship between religion, politics, and public spectacle during this time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Brossura. Condition: new. Napoli, 2025; br., pp. 282.(Compendi). "The descriptive text specifically mentions that the sequence of the decorations followed a carefully conceived design. The decorated city gate and the first triumphal arch were to indicate the city of Bologna's reverence for His Holiness; the subsequent ceremonial constructions were intended to glorify the Pope and his merits" (Bartsch, 40/1, p. 294). Traces of a paper strip removed from the title page. Four plates slightly trimmed in the bottom edge. A very good copy on thick paper. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION (it was reprinted in 1599, with an additional plate showing a triumphal arch erected outside of Bologna and not described in the text, and, later on by Giuseppe Longhi under the title ?Dissegni degl'apparati.'). When Pope Clement VIII visited Bologna for three days (starting on November 27, 1598) on his return trip to Rome after a long stay in Ferrara, which had again politically and economically been reintegrated into the Church State, several triumphal arches and some festival architecture were established. On the one hand, one wanted to pay homage to the Pope, but on the other, one wanted to point to the independence of the city of Bologna.?Il libro contiene una descrizione degli apparati effimeri eretti per allestire i festeggiamenti in onore del pontefice, che il 27 novembre 1598 fece la sua entrata solenne in città da Porta Galliera.
