A speech defending Episcopal practices preached before the Long Parliament by Sir Benjamin Rudyerd (1572-1658), English poet-politician and early colonial investor. For a Protestant and Parliamentarian, Rudyerd remained unusually attached to the institution of Episcopacy, ending his speech with the declaration that 'I am as much for reformation, for purging and maintaining religion, as any man whatsoever: but I profess, I am not for innovation, demolition, nor abolition.'
