CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor shelf soiling and rubbing; covers bright. Interior is clean and tight. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: From the introduction: "These recollections of events that occurred in Virginia during the great and bloody struggle between the States, in which the writer shared in common with his Company, are collated principally from letters written to a friend at home while the war was progressing." The Surry Light Artillery was organized as infantry and assigned to the 3rd Regiment Virginia Infantry. During April 1862, it was transferred to the artillery. The unit was assigned to the Richmond defenses and later to C.E. Lightfoot's Battalion, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. It participated in the operations against Petersburg and ended the war at Appomattox with 19 men. Its commanders were Captains James D. Hankins and Thomas W. Ruffin. REFERENCES: DORN II #1175; HOWES J192 "aa"; COULTER 264 "The book is made up of letters which Jones wrote to a friend and therefore has the freshness and reliability of contemporary comment."; NEVINS: I pg. 114: "Jones letters while a member of a Confederate artillery unit offers many insights into the life of wartime Richmond.". …

Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1955 original copyright, this is the second printing of the first edition, 1956 (more notes on printing and hand-lettered binding below). vii, 246pp. Book itself in very good+ condition; DJ in good+ condition. Text is unmarked and clean, pages bright and crisp. Binding is tight, sturdy, and square. Corners sharp. Top edge is dark blue and matches color of boards and jacket. Very light edgewear to head and heel (wouldn't even merit mention on a book of lesser value). Clipped dust jacket has moderate wear to edges, including some small closed tears and three pea-sized chips, and light rubbing. The silver and blue cover remains bright, DJ now protected in Mylar wraps. From colophon: "The text of this book was set on the Linotype in elven-point Electra, a type with a contemporary flavor, well suited to a book on techniques as modern as those of public relations. Chapter heads are set in Metromedium with Electra italics. The book title of the title page and binding was lettered by hand. The paper used is Warren's Olde Style." Contributors include Edward Bernays (as editor and contributor of essay), Howard W. Cutler, Sherwood Dodge, Benjamin Fine, Doris Fleischman, A. Robert Ginsburgh, John Price Jones, and Nicholas Samstag. From my own private collection (thus my confidence in saying that text is unmarked). Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.…

House doc.], 33.OCLC 29139384.Patrick Magruder (1768-1819) was the second Librarian of Congress and served in that capacity from 1807-1815. He served both as the Clerk of the House and as Librarian of Congress as had his predecessor. Magruder had the misfortune of serving in those capacities at the time the Capitol of the United States was burned by the British during the War of 1812. At the time of the burning of the Capitol in August of 1814 Magruder was absent from Washington, D.C. for health reasons. .He left the Office of the House and the Library of Congress in the charge of his brother George Magruder and two assistants. In addition to the books in the Library of Congress Patrick Magruder's office records which included the financial records of the House of Representative were destroyed. A Congressional investigation into Magruder's handling of Congressional funds found discrepancies including a shortage of $20,000. .Although Magruder managed to avoid prosecution for his actions, he resigned on January 28, 1815. I have in my collection an 1814 government publication which contains a letter from Patrick Magruder to the Speaker of the House in defense of his actions which in turn includes an account by two office assistants of the events leading to the destruction of the Office of the House and the Library of Congress. Their account says in part, "every thing belonging to the office, together with the library of congress, we venture to say, might have been removed in time, if carriages could have been procured, but it was altogether impossible to procure them, either for hire or by force." After Magruder's resignation the positions of Clerk of the House and Librarian of Congress were separated. different broadside from Marshall. From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.…
