First edition, hardcover lacking its slipcase, marked as no. 162/500 on the limitation page, has bumps to the spine ends and corners, splitting to the paper at the upper fore corner of the front cover with a touch of wear to the paper at the other corners, sunning to the spine and edges, rubbing with mild smudges and spots to the covers, a couple small peels to the front fly leaf where a plate appears to have been lifted, and a short crease to the corner of Mosher's tipped in portrait near the front. Overall, this is a solid, Near Very Good copy.

Quarter creme linen with spine label and powder blue paper-covered boards, slipcase, small 4to., 211, (4) pages, 21 mounted facsimiles and collotype portrait of Mosher. One of 500 numbered copies designed by Leonard Baskin and printed by Harold McGrath on Fabriano paper at the Gehenna Press from Van Dijck type. The facsimiles were printed from line engravings on Arches and Shizuoka Vellum. Loosely inserted are an extra label, a presentation slip, and a holiday greeting for 1968 from the Gehenna Press printed in four colors. A fine copy with no wear or fading of the spine, in archival mylar, in a solid, very good paper-covered slipcase with spine label, showing only small paper tears to some extremities and light soiling. A superlative copy of a book often seen in less than pleasing condition.

Thomas Bird Mosher (1852-1923) has been praised as an American Aldus, whose finely-printed and modestly priced editions "introduced Americans to 'the literature of rapture'" (William E. Fredeman). He was a major exponent of the British Pre-Raphaelites and Aesthetes as well as other British Victorians. This essential reference includes a biographical essay by Ray Nash. Quarto: 212 with an addenda. The type is Monotype Van Dijck, the paper Fabriano. The tipped-in facsimiles were printed from line engravings on Arches and on Shizuoka Vellum to simulate the papers used by Mosher. The three illustrations were reproduced by The Meriden Gravure Company in Meridan, Connecticut. The pressman was Harold McGrath. Original light blue paper-covered boards over a linen spine, with a printed paper spine label (a duplicate is tipped in at the rear. The spine is ever so slightly faded; else a fine copy. Housed in the publisher's slipcase.

Illustrated with 19 Mounted Letter Press Facsimiles of Title pages in Red and Black on Paper closely Simulating those used by Mosher. This is the printer's copy, inscribed by Baskin and presented to Stanley Clifford "with the affection of" Leonard Baskin, dated 1967. Clifford started as a hand leather bookbinder at Bennett Book Studio in Manhattan. He came to be respected as one of the finest craftsmen practicing this trade, a reputation that allowed work to follow him to Deer Isle, ME where he and fellow islander Leonard Baskin became close friends, attracted by a mutual interest in the book arts. Ironically, an unbound copy in 20 signatures. Some staining to rear page and signature spines.
