From a contemporary review by Richard Copley Christie: ".whoever is already the owner of what he justly calls "l'exposé magistral " of M. Willems, and acquires a copy of the Nouvelles Études of Dr. Berghman, may be satisfied that he possesses the command of all that is known, or likely to be known, on the subject of the Elzevier impressions. The main portion of Dr. Berghman's volume is divided into two parts, the first comprising a supplemental list, furnished by M. Willems (but with many valuable notes of Dr. Berghman's own) of 104 volumes issued by the Elzeviers, but which were unknown to him when his monumental work was printed in 1880, of six additional volumes of counterfeits, and of five volumes included in his work, but which he now recognises are not genuine issues of the printers ; the second and by far the most valuable and interesting part being remarks by Dr. Berghman from copies in his own possession upon no less than 576 impressions described by Willems. In some cases he corrects, in others he supplements the statements of the latter, but in each case he gives us the result of his own personal and critical examination of the volume in question, and he has succeeded in throwing very considerable light on the fleurons and the ornamental capitals (lettres grises) which are so well-known and so interesting a feature of the Elzevier impressions.
