Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London, J.M. Dent, 1926. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A rare fantasy work. Bernard Sleigh is perhaps best now remembered for his maps of Fairyland (primarily Ancient Mappe of Fairyland - though at least one earlier map exists), with his fiction becoming a little sidelined. I think this is his first and only book of prose (preceded by poetry). The book is published with a woodcut by Sleigh to the verso of a prelim between the half title and title leaves. Presumably the jacket is by Sleigh too. Contains 10 short pieces examining encounters with fairies, dryads and water nymphs. Apparently, Bleiler took the book as a sleight on Conan Doyle and his belief in fairies, though it seems Doyle and Sleigh were on the same page. Subtitled 'being sundry records from the proceedings of the Society for the Investigation of Faery Fact & Fallacy' - the society beign a framing narrative for the stories. The jacket has a couple of chips to the spine, a few short tears and some nibbling to the top edge. Spotted to the reverse. Internally there's a little foxing, covering the block edges as well. A square from another copy of the jacket has been pasted to the frontis leaf recto, for some reason. Seller's sticker to the front pastedown. A presentable copy of an uncommon book. [13117, Hyraxia Books].

Rubbed spine ends. Bottom corners bumped. Cloth worn through on places along bottom. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. 4to. An elegantly designed volume with printed page borders and two-colour printed annotations, decorative head pieces and a stunning introductory illustration, all by Bernard Sleigh. A reprint of Havelock Ellis's translation of Renan's dramatic rendition the ancient Hebrew drama, written some time after the death of Solomon. This edition was produced as a fine printing, likely in-house, project and hence was produced to exacting, perhaps even decadent, standards. An attractive and uncommon example of work produced by the Birmingham Group, an informal collective of painters and craftsmen associated with the later stages of the arts and crafts movement. Bernard Sleigh (1872-1954) was an English artist best known for An ancient mappe of Fairyland, published in 1920. Sleigh was a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists between 1923 and 1928 and produced work for many of the contemporary private presses. In 1927 he co-founded the Fairy Investigation Society, a semi-secret group devoted to collecting evidence for the existence of fairies with members such as Ithell Colquhoun, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Walt Disney. Ivy Ann Ellis trained under Sleigh at the Birmingham School of Art and exhibited from 1920 to 1939 with the RBSA. In 1954 she was granted probate of Sleigh's estate. The binder, Frank Garrett, was closely associated with the Birmingham School of Art and learned his craft from Douglas Cockerell. The Kynoch Press was established in 1876 as a company press for Kynoch, a British manufacturer of ammunition. From 1922 to 1933, the press commissioned leading artists to produce fine editions in small limitations in the hopes of gaining wider recognition. Small landscape quarto, pp. [24]. With 12 woodcuts in black within green frames. Title page printed in green and black, decorative initials in green. Original white quarter cloth, illustrated green boards, titles printed in green to white paper label on front cover. Gift inscription on front pastedown. Rubbing to corners, faint foxing, glue residue to front pastedown: a very good copy.
