William John Bernhard (illustrator). The Jewel Merchants. In Linocuts by William John Bernhard. Privately printed. Bound collection of seven linocut prints. 13" x 10". Hardcover. Overall fair, due to staining down spine and to nearby segments of boards. Chips and losses down spine and along edges of dust jacket. Hinges remain tight and text block remains bound well. Tissue guard of image of Guido creased. Small stains and pencil remnants to front end page. Bookseller label on front flap of dust jacket. Marked as No. 1 of a total over 75 copies. Also includes detached original advertisement slip. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. An extremely scarce piece of art by William John Bernhard. This appears to be Bernhard's personal copy, and is accompanied by two notes by James Branch Cabell requesting and subsequently thanking him for his artistic contributions. Frontispiece of Cabell also signed by Bernhard (1879-1958) was a prominent American fantasy fiction author whose escapist-themed works were most popular during his lifetime. A rare piece of 1920s art history.
